Set of pics here.

"Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement" is a backronym for Steve. From Wikipedia:

Steve is caused by a 25 km (16 mi) wide ribbon of hot plasma at an altitude of 450 km (280 mi), with a temperature of 3,000 °C (3,270 K; 5,430 °F) and flowing at a speed of 6 km/s (3.7 mi/s) (compared to 10 m/s (33 ft/s) outside the ribbon).

Photos taken 2016-09-02.

Equipment

  •     Canon EOS 6D
  •     Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens at 24mm f/2.8
  •     iOptron Skytracker
  •     60s exposures, stack of 6 in the GIF
  •     ISO-1600

I was taking wide angle pics of the Milky way when some annoying clouds started forming in the north.  It turns out they were purple and green.  And then one appeared right across the zenith like a chemtrail wink.gif  and it extended down to the east horizon.

Animated GIF here. The GIF shows the "picket fence" effect.

Now that is really a great catch! Could you share the location with us? Very impressive! This is the first time I have heard of this "sky glow" as the pro's are calling it.

Thanks for sharing!

I was lucky enough to see "STEVE" southwest of Spokane, WA in April 2017.  It was white like your GIF animation, but with no colors.
