I recently went from an Canon 50Da to an ASI294MC Pro camera and learning how to use this thing.  I'm impressed with the details I get with it, and very pleased so far, but not understanding how to get color.

Setup:

  • APT for capturing
  • ASCOM Driver for ASI camera

Settings:

  • In ASCOM, tried both unity gain setting as well as HDR.
  • Monbin is unchecked
  • RAW16
  • RGGB

Workflow:

  • I take the photos an try processing them with Siril in Linux. I've used Siril a lot with the DSLR and got great results.
  • I open the .fit files in Siril
  • Convert  with Debayer checked
  • I do have the RGGB set in Settings with VNG for Debayer interpolation
  • Unchecked "bayer from header" since APT didn't seem to have that, but either way it does the same thing.
  • Convert and do the usual pre-processing registration and stacking.
  • The final image comes out with RGB channels.
  • Flipping through them the Red and blue are identical, and the green is the only different one.
  • Processing in Startools, there is no way to pull out any colors.

I tried imaging a tree a mile away and got the same results.

Ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

Tom

Color calibration.  You should have had to do that with your dslr too.

I did a short stint with Siril and this camera.  What I found was Siril's intermediate FITS format flipped the image order from top to bottom, so RGGB becomes GBRG.  Setting that to debayer the Siril FITS files gave me the results I wanted.

I don't have Siril loaded right now to confirm, but basically for your lights you Calibrate, Debayer (GBRG), Stack.

Hmm...that might be it.  Just debayered some frames and all channels seem different now.   Update soon....

Ok!  I think that was the problem.  Siril has a little box called "Debayer in up-bottom orientation".  I checked that and RGB channels were all different now.

Probably not very good yet, but it's an improvement over what I did earlier.  I was just about to start pulling out my hair with frustration.    I'll try a few more of my images and see if it's consistent.

Here is M106 area.

THANKS!!

Another attempt.  Colors show up well now.  I do have to work on background crud, but that's the next step. Thanks again fort the idea, that was it!
