Does anyone know whether a 2" to 1.25" adapter is required to enable use of the TV 1.25" diagonal with the TV85?  Just bought both but didn't order an adapter.  If it is required, which one is better for primarily visual use, the flat top or the high hat?

Clear skies.

I’m pretty certain the TV85 comes standard with a 2”-1.25” adapter that can be used with a 1.25” diagonal, or to use 1.25” eyepieces with the 2” diagonal. The high hat is used on the eyepiece end of the 2” diagonal for barlows or eps with long barrels to prevent contact with mirror surface.

Thanks Doug. Seems like that adapter is no longer included; it definitely wasn’t with mine.

Yes you will need an adapter.  Guess I'd go high hat.  With the 1.25" diagonal you will have lots of back focus -- maybe too much.  You wont need to run the focuser out quite so far with high hat.

The new TV85 packaging basically only includes the scope. All accessories are extras. I would have jumped in and highly recommended you get the 2” diagonal to take advantage of the fantastic wide field views the TV85 provides. Maybe something to think about for the future.

I am surprised to hear that - I stand corrected. I appreciate TV not “requiring” one to buy a diagonal and a Plossl eyepiece as in past but things like the adapter and a clamshell are pretty basic needs for an OTA. Then again, I seem to have collected unintentionally, many 2-1.25” adapters over the years.

My 85 bought new last year did not have one either. But I had a TV 2 inch diagonal already, which was sold with one.
