I bought Mike Swanson’s ebook and have been perusing the web site(s) but I’m still a bit confused about the correct cable to connect a Nexstar+ hand controller (with mini USB connector) to the older USB model SkyFi 2 ( with USB and also RJ11).

If I understand correctly, it LOOKS like USB to mini USB should work, but it won’t actually, because the Nexstar + is really only wanting serial data.

Is that correct?

If I understand, what I actually need is a cable that goes from the RJ11 (serial) on the SkyFi, and eventually transitions to mini USB at the hand control.

So probably two cables:
1) (from SkyFi) RJ11 to DB9
2 ) DB9 to mini USB (to Nexstar+)

Am I getting this correct?

Hi Phil,

Thank you for buying the book!

To my knowledge, the SkyFi II does NOT work with the USB hand control.  That was the main update on SkyFi III.  Best to ask Simulation Curriculum to ensure that is true.

Best regards,

Simulation Curriculum confirmed that SkyFi 2 will not work with Nexstar + controller with any cable configuration.

If I get a new SkyFi 3, which cable would I use to connect to the Nexstar + handset?

1) USB on SkyFi 3 to USB mini on Nexstar + ?

2) DB9 on SkyFi 3 to USB mini on Nexstar + ?

3) other?

Thanks!

Phil

Hi Phil,

To be a bit more precise, SkyFi II will not work with the NexStar+ and StarSense hand controls with a USB port on the bottom. There are NexStar+ and StarSense hand controls with the older serial port (RJ-22 jack) and SkyFi II works fine with those.

I don't know what type of connector the SkyFi III has but the end that connects to the NexStar+/StarSense hand control is USB mini (not micro as found on most phones).

Best regards,
