Dear CN folks,

My name is Phuc Dang, from Vietnam. I am a CN member since 2014, and my first telescope was made in 2005, it's a homemade 60mm F1000 refractor (with spectacle objective lens). Since that very first humble telescope, the passion of telescope making just keep growing up with me over the years, and I had made dozens of telescopes, range from 76mm to 12.5", all Dobsonian designed. Last year, I and some of my fellow stargazers decided to start a business in manufacturing astronomical telescope for Vietnam's market - which is currently 99.999% flooded by cheapo refractor and Newtonian telescope from China.

In the past 1.5 years, we had worked hard to introduce to stargazing enthusiast in Vietnam our very first product, which is called SW114 telescope.

SW114 is a classical Dobsonian with 114mm spherical primary mirror and 900mm focal length, this is a familiar and popular spec for a 114mm Newtonian telescope. What set us apart from others small-scaled telescope making company is that we're capable of designing our own mechanical telescope parts like focuser, mirror cell, spider... for our Newtonian to fit the overall design of the telescope.

Here're some photos of the SW114:

Bearing materials for Dobson mount are teflon ride on PVC on both Alt and Az axis.

The SW114 comes with 1.25" crayford focuser, collimation cap, 2 Plossl eyepiece, eyepiece tray, red-dot EZ-II finder and 2 years warantty.

Retail price for the SW114 in Vietnam is 5,000,000 VNĐ (about $215 USD), and is now ready to be shipped to the customer at anytime.

Currently our website is under construction, so I will update the link later. Incase any one of you here happen to live in Vietnam and is looking for a good telescope, please call me at (+84) 374050887 to place an order.

Thank you for your interest.

Phuc Dang

Incredible. That is a beautiful telescope for that price. Thank you for sharing.

The optics are imported from China.

Hi Phuc Dang,

I, like many others, have the 114mm OTAs in my closet - Meade/Celestron/Vixen. NO mount. They have the rings and Vixen dovetail hardware for mounting on a standard equatorial head.  I would love to have my 114mm Dob mounted.

Would you consider a package deal (and maybe be a little cheaper to ship) - the complete Dob mount without the telescope part (OTA)?

Also - your mirror cell is a pretty piece. Sell separately too?

Your telescope is very well executed and beautiful to look at. waytogo.gif

good job!

Thank you for your compliment!

At the moment, we've made just enough dob base for the first telescope batch. Next batch (about 3 more weeks) we will made some extra base, as well as other part like focuser, mirror cell to sell separately. The cradle box and mirror cell on the SW114 only work with 140mm tube size, does it fit to your OTA?

Hello, will you be making others with a larger primary mirror, like an 8” or 10” in the future?

We have plan for 6", but not for bigger size at the moment. In the future, yes we will if things going well.

Huh? What happened to my comment? I distinctly remember commenting here yesterday. Well, doesn't matter. Very, very nice looking scope, is what I wanted to say.

Well, the Moderator did temporary delete this topic until my status was granted as a vendor, that might cause some effect to your comment. This is my fault :((

Beautiful looking scope!

Congrats on the start of your company. It's great that you'll be able to provide a good scope for people to buy in your country.

Have you explored shipping cost to the USA?

I measured two of my OTAs - one was 136mm and the other was 143mm diameter. Given the variation, my best option would be to order one of your complete scopes so I get the nice mirror cell and focuser - and a guaranteed good fit in the clam shell.

I could transplant my optics into the scope. I have parabolic mirrors. I have tested parabolic vs spherical mirrors in these 114mms and honestly, could find no difference - in focus - on the performance on star images or planetary viewing. A well made spherical mirror in this application performs excellently.

If you make a 150/1200mm telescope with your very nice 1.25" focuser, try to keep the secondary mirror as small as possible and the same very compact design of your base. These would differentiate your scope from other commercial dobson.

Indeed! Although the different in image quality between a parabolic and a spherical mirror at this f ratio of this mirror size is negligeable, the idea of having a parapolic mirror in the cell is allways tempting!

If you plan to transplant the optics, please bear in mind the mirror cell on SW114 was designed for mirror with gauge diameter no larger than 114.5mm and 14mm thickness.

The estimated shipping cost by VN Post services for the SW114 parcel from VN to US is about $90 (10-14 days to arrived), this is the lowest price of all I got. Is it ok for you?

Sure we will move to D150 f/8 very soon. Although I have a 12.5" dob with Zambuto mirror, this is still my favourist size of all flowerred.gif flowerred.gif flowerred.gif

$90 sounds reasonable.

Now for the more difficult part - How to arrange payment? Over here most of us use PayPal. Do you have PayPal in VN?

I do use Paypal for international transaction (the address is dangthe_phuc@yahoo.com), and have been buying and selling astro stuff on CN's Classifieds couple of times.

It's $215 + $6 (3% paypal fee) + $90 = $311, then we have a deal :)

The real shipping cost at the post office counter might be a bit higher than $90, however I will absorb the extra for you. Honestly this is our first scope to go oversea, so needless to say we're also very excited!

~$320 for an excellent 4.5" f/8 dobsonian with a fine 1.25" focuser and well-designed mirror cell isn't a bad deal at all!! I'm looking forward to the reviews - and to the 6" f/8 version.
