I go on my once every couple of months or so “validation that it’s all trash sweep” of “telescope” in the local online classifieds, and come across this, an old blue tube Coulter. $150. How bad could it be? I’ve spent that much on a night at the bar. I raise my hand up and speak for it, sight unseen and picked it up tonight. Turns out it was the original owner, he sold a car to buy it in 1981, and used it on and off, but mostly off for quite a few years. The thing is in remarkable shape, given it’s age, the only mod being the small counterweight bar, and nice UO finder. Came with the original manual, and binocular eyepiece.  I tried it out on the Moon, and it came to focus, but I’ll need to collimate it to see how bad (or good) it is.

I’ll be using it mostly for outreach, and to show that if you’re patient and know what to look for, it’s possible to get something decent for next to nothing...

Wonder how the optics are. I just sold a primary from one of these scopes that was quite good optically.....

We’ll have to wait for a verdict, the “Astro-purchase cloud bank” just moved in. That, and I’m going on a motorcycle ride Saturday, so not a chance of nice weather. frown.gif lol.gif
