My first M27 looks more like a pie or a pastry, rather than a dumbbell.

Imaging telescope:Explore Scientific 102mm ED APO triplet ES 102 FCD100
Imaging camera:QHY183M
Mount:EQ6 R pro
Guiding telescope or lens:QHYCCD off-axis guider QHYOAG
Guiding camera:QHYCCD QHYIII290C
Focal reducer:Stellarvue 0.8 FF&R
Software: EQMOD, SGP, Sharpcap, PHD2, Pixinsight
Filter: Astronomik 6nm OIII,  6 nm Ha

Ha: 41 x 180 sec
OIII: 31 x 180 sec

Wow! You have really captured alot of the outer Nebulosity! Nice image. And yes I can see the Apple Pie Pastry. I'm hungry now.

Yeah, a number of the DSO objects are mis-named.  The Flame Nebula, for example, looks more like a burning Artichoke to me.

Exactly! And the Horsehead next to it is just a Mushroom.

And while we're at it, the PacMan nebula is actually a cosmic pizza with a slice missing.  Probably eaten by one of the Seven Sisters...

 

On a more serious note, I'm curious about the naming of these astronomical targets.  Seems like they would have been named many decades if not centuries ago, yet "PacMan" is a relatively recent addition to our vocabulary.  Did the nebula get renamed from something else, or ?  How does the naming process work?
