I never bought anything in my life so I could flash a label. I used to mar everything I owned to obscure labels, from using a razor blade to spray paint to electrical and duct tape.

If I was in the market I'd gladly take an unlabeled AT102ED. Hell, I'd probably pay extra for one.

How would you know it's an AT102ED? Is it marked on the cell?

Maybe for those who might swap out their unmarked sliding dew shield for one that is marked, that might create a small market of unmarked sliding dew shields that could possibly be swapped for the fixed version many of us have. Since my lens cell retaining ring is marked with the scopes particulars, a plain slider might be nice although I’m very happy with the fixed dew shield. Is that even possible?

It is not.  The dew shield unscrews from the trim ring which has to stay with the scope.  So, unfortunately, there is no way to make that happen.  Sorry about that.

You mean to tell me that there is no markings(information, specs) on the front cell at all?  How do you know what you just bought????  If this is the case, I'll wait until they correct that error-before purchasing an "unbranded scope.

Darn. Oh well. As I said I’m very happy with the fixed dew shield so no biggie.

Thanks for the clarification Michael.

No - if I understand correctly the dew shield does not have "Astrotech 102ED" or whatever they expected to be printed on it.  I would guess the lens cell has information like "102mm f/7 ED APO" or some such label.

Full specs are on the front cell, just not the Astro-Tech name.

As far as not knowing what you bought, I’m pretty sure ( could be wrong) that only AT scopes have Aston Martin grey trim, so if that’s correct then it should be easy to tell the AT’s apart from other similar scopes. But what do I know? Lol.

Installing a dry-transfer decal is very easy. I would simply send them to customers, and let them decide.

OK, You had me going for a second. I thought- no way could they sell a scope that had no specs on the front cell. So no branding on the dew shield is acceptable.

I would be thrilled to have one of these in my hands with or without the name. The only one really being hurt here is Astronomics as their brand is not on this fine scope. If anyone wants to trade for a 1st gen branded AT102ED just let me know and you can have mine. It's been tested and broken in for you smile.gif

No branding of any kind is a major screw up. It’s not an esthetics issue, it’s not even an “identity” issue but it’s identification issue. The one which will be particularly important in 5, 10... years from now. How could something like that pass QC - assuming it’s not actually ordered that way which seems to be negated by a post by astronomics above - is beyond me. Sloppy is an understatement. Yes, it affects the scope’s performance exactly 0% but still... so what is going to be a solution? Mailing customers AT stickers to slap them on the tubes? seriously, sad.

Well we all know what they say about opinions....

After I got home from work yesterday to find my AT102ED double-boxed and suspended in an ocean of styrofoam peanuts (awesome job Mike! waytogo.gif), I was so excited checking out its excellent focuser, tube rings, dew shield and paint finish, that I didn't even realize that it was missing the AT logos until I read this thread.

No big deal.  I'm just glad that it showed up in time for my July new moon outing.  Thank you Bieler family, for offering such a nice scope at a great price!

Looking at the objective cell pix above, are these back to having a sliding dew shield?  I thought the last run dew shield was fixed.

Can someone tell me the outside dimension of the end of the scope(Dew shield)?

I want to get a solar filter for mine.

Thank You!
