Octagonal alt az reflector? My first wooden tube was square. I think there were examples like this in the Atm book series.

Enough Driveway , Back to the scope .

The Buyers Acquisition Story ..........

Craigslist , Email only reply ad , between ME and RON the seller .... I much prefer phone replies due to the fact that sometimes Email replies get lost in C-list cyber space or go to sellers SPAM   .. ( Not That Kind Of SPAM , Robert ) lol.gif

Me ... (Email) ... Is your scope still for sale ? If so can we speak Via the phone ? XXX- XXX- XXXX my cell #

Ron ...Yes it is ( email response )

PHONE CALL came next from Ron

Me......( Questions ) Measurements ? Distinguishing markings ? History ? where did you get it  ? the usual questions .

Ron... " I don't know it's at my other house . I'll check and get back to you "

Me ...Thank you .......CLICK

7/11/19 .. Ron calls again , and is with said scope .

Ron ..." It's 8" across the octagon tube , yes I see a mirror in the bottom but it looks dirty , the scope on the side is dirty too , It's heavy maybe 45 lbs total , it has some squiggly markings on it can't make them out ,  looks like some kind of hieroglyphics or some kind of Masonic Symbol and SEPT. 1935 ....I got it at a estate sale in June , Estate seller said her dad made it in 1935 ..."

Me ...." Are you firm on the selling price ? ( I explained the expense of a RE coating the mirror and what was involved , The drive 2.5 hours one way , Gas , Tolls , etc. round trip expenses  )  lol.gif

Ron ...." Whatcha Thinkin' "

Me... 50 Bucks ?

Ron ... OK

Me .... See ya in 2.5 hours ..... By , Thanks , CLICK lol.gif

At Ron's house , North side of Pittsburgh Pa. 2.5 hrs later lol.gif

I examine said scope in person .... My findings .....smiley-char145.gif

6" f 8 primary with a PRISM secondary yay.gif

...Old pipe fittings ..I don't even think they make 90* Unions anymore ? shrug.gif

...One seam , riveted , sheet metal Octagonal , OTA

...Fixed adjustable focus eyepiece on the finder scope ( EXTREMELY dirty but can faintly make out reticle cross hairs )

...Helical focuser   with a fixed screw on EP

...Primary mirror cell affixed with 8 round head slotted screws ... Collimation  is achieved by loosening the 8 round head screws and tilting sheet metal cell then tighten down when collimated   . That should be fun lol.gif

...Sheet metal dust caps for both end of OTA

Now the funny part . Those " Squiggly , Hieroglyphic , Masonic markings " quote Ron .

Turns out Ron is pretty much a " Flipper "  anything for a buck . Ron got this scope  along with a Emperor Tempus Fugit Grandfather clock ( most likely a " Kit "Clock ) . Inside the door of the grandfather clock was a brass plaque engraved with " This clock was made by Charles W. Peiffer " .... Ron said the person in charge of the estate sale said he was her father and he made the Clock and The Scope ......The " Squiggly , Hieroglyphic , Masonic markings "  turned out to be the connected  calligraphy fonts , C and P = Charles Peiffer  as seen in my first post .lol.gif

NOW I HAD A MAKERS NAME TO PUT WITH THE SCOPE !....... That is another story for another day , more on this later .....

Flipped Ron 50 bucks , shook hands , then 2.5 hrs back home ..............

Who knows? The Shadow knows.

" Who knows , Charles W. Peiffer ? The Shadow Knows ."

Now the rest of the story . The detective work to find out more about Charles , the maker of the telescope (If I can ) .

Once I got home from Pittsburgh PA. . I sat this scope up in the drive way and collected some photons with it for the first time in a long time . All tho  out of collimation and extremely dirty optics the old scope did reward a dim and dirty image of the moon . I then put the scope to rest in the garage and proceeded upstairs to rest myself ( Miller Time ) ....

Before I went to bed that night , I couldn't stop thinking , Who was Charles W. Peiffer ?  Sooo ! .... I got on the computer for a little bit , to see what I could find about Charles .

1st. Google search ...Charles W. Peiffer Pittsburgh Pa . .... That gave me a hit on Grace A. ( Swanson ) PEIFFER , DOB 3/18/1914 DOD 11/25/2009....... Related  to Charles W. Peiffer , Carol J. Peiffer , and William K. Schad .  With a little more digging I found the address  of 107 Carl st. . That matched the general area that my Craigslist  seller  ( RON ) told me where he bought it from . So I knew I was close .....

2nd. Google search ... Charles 's Obituary ...... Found It !... Charles W. Peiffer , DOB 4/30/1909 , DOD 4/1/1982  . With Grace as his wife and Carol J Peiffer , and William K. Schad  as relatives . ALSO the 107 Carl st. address ...BINGO

NOW... With Charles and Grace Both Deceased , I was left with possible living  relatives , MAYBE.  ( Side Note : In 1935 Charles Peiffer was 26 yrs. old when he made this telescope in the height of the Great Depression )

3rd. Google search... Carol J. Peiffer ( Daughter of Grace and Charles , MAYBE ? )  FINDINGS..... Carol J. owned the 107 Carl st. , Pittsburgh Pa. property . She now lives in a small town 40 min. north of Pittsburgh Pa. and is 73 yrs old .. Daughter OR Sister ? at this point I do not know .... Google Whitepages , DID yield  an , Address , THREE Phone Numbers , and a same list of relatives to Charles W. Peifer , for Carol J. Peiffer ....

At this time after all this searching , it's 11:45 pm. and it is to late to try the 3 phone numbers .  Can't hardly wait till the next day in the late AM. to try the numbers .............

More on the story and the 3 phone numbers called the next day to come .........Stay Tuned lol.gif
