These are very well made and meant to last.

I owned one for a while, the Cape Cod All Brass.

The polished brass is clear coated to protect from tarnishing.

Yes the plumb bob and the brass circle was to level the mount.

These were for watching ships entering the harbor and often used on uneven surfaces like

ruff cut timber floors in buildings near the docks.

I just became the caretaker of a twin of the nice brass french telescope described in this thread.  Earlier in this thread I described the scope as being made by Bardou, but now I think it was made by Vion Freres (brothers).  Here's a picture of the tailpiece of my E.B. Meyrowitz branded scope.

Here a shot of the objective lens.  I believe the "VF" written in pencil on edge stand for Vion Freres.  I don't know what the "PM 407" stands for, maybe someone here has a clue?
