I have noticed there are a bunch of different versions of the 56mm Meade Plossl. Can anyone tell me what the differences are between them, how to tell which are what version, and which ones are the best? Thanks!

The smooth top with no eye cup made in Japan is the best

Rare as people hang onto them. How do they compare to the TV 55 Plossl?

That is possibly the 5-element, made-in-Japan version, but could be the later 4-element version.

At any rate, it is still better than the current versions.

The latest Chinese version is great for low power sweeping so when you all say the Japanese versions are better, this really intrigues me. How are they better/different?

As Don said the original Meade 56mm from Japan has 5 lens elements and no eye cup.  The initial 2nd generation from Japan with eye cup also had 5 lens then they switched to 4 lens also from Japan

The 5 lens version is sharper and better corrected compared to any of the 4 lens versions

I believe the older versions were fully multi-coated.  The newest ones have no coatings on the internal surfaces.

You guys are awesome, thank you! Does anyone have more information on how to tell which is which, number of elements (without taking it apart like maybe by weight?), coatings, etc.?

Look at the number of reflections off a light source.   If you see only 4 then you have a 4 lens version
