The weather forecast for this weekend for the Labor Day Weekend Star Gaze, Deep South Trial Run or Len Philpot Invitational Star Gaze or whatever you want to call it is looking pretty good!

It starts tomorrow, Thursday, because of the favorable weather, and runs to Monday, September 2nd.  Thursday, Friday and even Saturday are looking pretty good.

See the image.  Green blocks are good (clear skies) and the black stripes designate the hours of darkness.

Our location, the White Horse Christian Retreat Camp, 3 miles off of Hwy 35 and located north of Bogalusa, LA and south of Columbia, MS, is the current site of the 37 year old Deep South Star Gaze.  We have plenty of space to set up and low horizons which gave us easy views of Omega Centaurus last spring.  The event this weekend is our "trial run" for our upcoming Deep South Star Gaze.

Note to anyone who wants a quick getaway and is flexible enough to attend on short notice - we have plenty of space!

Our favorable weather forecast did hold up and we had 3 clear nights (out of 3) for our short notice "Labor Day Weekend/Len Philpot Invitational Star Gaze".  This event served as sort of a "trial run" even though we did that last year prior to our first Deep South at our new site - the White Horse Christian Camp.  Our upcoming 37th Annual Deep South Star Gaze will be held from October 22nd to October 27th at this location..

The skies were good, albeit a bit more humid than I anticipated.  In spite of this I got SQM readings of 21.80 which equates to a limiting magnitude of 6.55, so Bortle 3 at the zenith.  Hopefully we may see slightly better numbers in October.

Here are a few photos.
