Hi All,

Just completed a usb-nSTEP STEPPER setup using belt drive to turn the focusing ring for camera lenses, and scopes like the WO Redcat that uses a focusing ring.  Looking forward to feedback from the Redcat customer, but trying it out on my DSLR, it looks to do the trick!  I think its a good alternative to split gears, as one belt can fit various size focusing rings.  Tension is adjusted by sliding the STEPPER in/out on its cross bar.  I have my DSLR attached to a dovetail bar, and the stepper rides on a crossbar attached to the dovetail bar.

here's a photo of the stepper and cross bar on my well worn dovetail bar, to show how it comes together.

stepper has 0.07 degree resolution (full steps) twice that in half stepping.  Given the gear ratio between the pulley gear and the focus ring, is about 3/1 that means about 0.02 degrees per full step!

What's the cost? I don't see it anywhere on your site.

hi the bracket and belt gear cost is the same as for all our other stepper kits.  We do over a hundred variants of focusers with gear coupling, this is our foray into belt coupling.  A usb-nSTEP basic + belt drive system (as above) is $351.80 plus shipping.

thank you for the inquiry :-)

I had a nSTEP setup from another scope that I've been modifying to fit various scopes.  I don't recall the original focuser mount that this came from, but it was easily installed on my WO Redcat.  I used a modified version of deepskydad's GT2 belt ring - which has the advantage of minimizing belt slip because the teeth match the belt, and the ring clamps on tightly to the rubber focusing sleeve.  I tested this out in SGP auto focus with a step size of 50 and 7 autofocus step points.  Perfect V curve!  There may be a bit of backlash to pull out, I haven't finalized my auto focus settings yet, but I know my geared version on my Stellarvue needs 35 steps of backlash clearing.

I've just got results back from a customer who's put it on his system.

"Got to try the belt driven focus on my Rokinon 135mm lens at f/2.8. Worked great! Attaching focus curves from Sequence Generator Pro (SGP). I used half stepping in Rigel software and in SGP: step size of 60, 9 point curve and 100 steps of backlash in 'IN' direction."

Example "V" curve below.  So consider the nSTEP Belt drive fully in production :-)  A usb-nSTEP basic + belt drive system is only $351.80 plus shipping.  Temp sensor included free with the full kit.

Here's the actual Rokinon 135mm lens setup for the AF curve shown above: (setup shown in the post above is my Nikon 105mm f/2.5 lens which I haven't tested yet)

Last night I tried AF at f/2, and that worked great as well.

So consider the nSTEP Belt drive fully in production :-)

Can confirm waytogo.gif Over two nights I ran SGP AF routine about 10 times, and the lowest quality score I got was 97%

I know this is an old thread, but I just stumbled on it while looking for a means to autofocus a camera lens.  This system looks like it would do a fine job, but I already have some hardware that controls a focuser - I'm using the Shoestring Astronomy FCUSB and their FocusPal software to control a Televue focuser on my TV-76 and a JMI focuser on my SCT.  What I would like to know is whether the FCUSB would be able to control the Belt Drive Stepper Motor Kit from Rigel Systems.
