This is a sketch of planet Neptune near 4th magnitude star 90Aqr. I was using a 26mm eyepiece for a magnification of 70x.

I did examine pale blue Neptune at much higher magnification but with no surface details seen. Because of its current location near the bright 4th magnitude star (90 Aqr.),  Neptune at 7.8 magnitude is easy to locate.

This sketch is on a large white index card. Using gimp 2.8 I inverted the sketch, cut it out and pasted to a black background.

Neptune was originally drawn with a brown colored pencil and 90 Aqr. was drawn with a blue colored pencil to get correct color upon inverting.

Frank :)

Thank you Tom,

I didn't try for any of Neptune's moons at high power but I think I can find a night with better transparency.

I have not looked at Neptune since last winter.

Frank :)

Pete,

I did this sketch in my light polluted back yard. Thank you.

I have a larger heavy scope but this one began with a piece of 7/8 in.stress free plate glass I purchased from a guy in Florida some

25 years ago for $80. I was too busy at work to begin grinding and figuring it until I retired. It is light weight and fits in my Honda CR-V without taking it apart. My daughter and I take it to dark skies a short drive from here to observe. Great fun.
