Downloaded Celestron Firmware Manager and Java. Loaded them both on my laptop. Had a mini-USB cable from an old phone and hooked it up to the HC on my Evolution mount. CFM doesn't recognize it. Followed the directions in the app:

Unplugged the HD and USB cable and turned off mount.

Then attached cable between PC and HC, held down the Menu and Celestron Logo buttons and turned the mount on.

Still nothing. Did not get the "Bootable" notice on HC.

Through fiddling around I found that if I kept the Mount turned off, held down the buttons and then connected the cable to the PC, I got the "Bootable" notice on the HC.

Then I tried turning on the Mount but still no dice.

-----------------------------------------------

Then I repeated the whole routine on my CGX mount. Same results.

With the mount turned off, when I connected the PC to the HC, and not pushing any buttons, the HD would power up and go to the alignment set up.

--------------------------------------

The reason I'm doing this is that I installed the Celestron Electronic Focuser and wanted to make sure everything is up to date. The CGX mount is newer and I can control the focuser with the HC. The Evolution is older and does not have the focuser option.

HELP!!!

My experience has been, not all usb to mini- usb cable are alike.

i found a couple of my “spare” mini-usb cables would not work with CFM.

I made sure I labeled those as NOT FOR CFM.

I did find some other cables that did work..

i would say if you have CFM connection failures on 2systems then you need a different cable.

Of course it might also be the usb driver your pc is using.

check this web site, search for , description of usb driver needed.

good luck.

Are you by chance using Windows 10?

I tried and failed when attempting an update using CFM on my Windows 10 laptop via USB-to-serial adapter. It did not recognize the connected handset. CFM worked fine on the Windows 7 laptop I keep around for exactly this sort of thing, using the same adapter.

I have since started using a new FTDI USB to RS-232 adapter on the Windows 10 machine, and it seems to be working more reliably than the older ones (one FTDI, one Prolific) on 10; those worked and continue to work fine under Win 7, but were somewhat flaky in Win 10, so that may have been part of the problem. I haven't tried running CFM with the new adapter yet.

Your USB handset, I think, uses the FTDI USB chipset, but I wonder if there is a driver issue. I could not use the more recent FTDI drivers with the old FTDI adapter on Win 10 and had to use an older version of the driver, even though, as far as I know, that adapter isn't using counterfeit parts.

Don,

It doesn't sound like Windows is even seeing the serial adapter in the hand control.  skaiser's suggestion about the mini-USB cable may be the issue or lack of the required Prolific driver may be the problem.  On this page of my website:

https://www.nexstars...m/PCControl.htm

There is a link for "Hand Control USB Cable" and "USB Drivers".

You can test whether Windows is seeing the serial adapter by opening Device Manager (just tap the Windows key on your keyboard, type Device Manager and open it from the search results), then click the + next to 'Ports (COM & LPT)' to show the actual ports Windows has recognized.  Plug and unplug the USB cable connected to the HC and you should see a com port appear and disappear.  If not, either the USB cable is a "power only" cable or you need to manually load the drivers (refer to that two articles above for more details on both).

Best regards,
Mike Swanson

Power only cable is a big possibility.

I cannot find the com ports.

I uploaded the USB drivers. No such luck. I think it's the cable.

Updated HC, Evolution mount,  and focuser. Also updated the CGX and it's HC. Tomorrow I'll attack my AVX which also has the mini-USB.

Thanks for the help guys!!
