Those plates allow a mount to be put on top of a fixed pier. Dan makes them for a number of different mounts.

It is what it say's it is It is  a PIER ADAPTER for the - 8" IOPTRON IEQ45 mount as a KIT.

It's so if you have this mount, you can mount it on a pier in your back yard or front yard or on the side, without using your tripod!

It is designed so you can use your Polar alignment adjustments like you would on your tripod.

It's to mount on a permanent upright Pier.

oh okay thanks. I am looking for a pier extender. So that is not what I need. I need the "pier extension." I just wanted to be sure. Thank you for answering!

Yep, I'm in the market for one of those too. Seems that they are not something you can get off a shelf for some mounts.

I've done a little research on the subject, and some have made their own extenders out of PVC pipe. WHAT!!! (you say bemusingly) PVC IS SO....PLASTIC, Why...it might break with the weight!

Actually PVC can be quite strong, and some brave people have tried their hand at making their own!
