I've seen these before but never had one, I understand it's some sort of adapter plate for the ETX series but my internet research didn't give me the info on exactly how it's used.

Please elucidate...

My understanding of this plate is that it is to go between the base of the ETX scope and the Meade 883 mount head.  It prevents the plastic base from sitting directly against/on the smaller diameter mounting surface on the 883.  It is, basically, a stiffener.  It is not used on the 884 model mount because the 884 has a larger surface area and the 3 feet of the ETX mount sit on that surface.

I might have my model numbers confused tho.....

Hmm, that makes sense as I have an 883 tripod and the top plate looks mighty small for an ETX-125.

So is this an aftermaket piece? It's not shown or mentioned in the Meade 883 instructions

That I don't know, Tom.  I've only ever seen it with the ETX + 883 and never with the ETX + 884.   No clue as the source of the part.

I found an article suggesting that the plate was supplied by Meade, although it's not clear if it was supplied with ETX125, 883 tripod or as a distinct item.

Found another link also suggesting that the plate was supplied by Meade, but only after receiving a complaints about ETX125+833 stability:

Thanks, it would appear the plate was provided by Meade, perhaps as an option only, perhaps with later issues of the tripod. As I agree, it would seem the two-bolt mounting on the top plate of the tripod alone is insufficient for any of the ETX's (but especially the 125).

Thanks
