I've read that just about everyone finds the AZ on this mount so tight it makes it nearly impossible to do a nice smooth pan (as do I).

My solution was to buy a relatively inexpensive Feisol PB-70 Panning Base.  I mounted it between my tripod and the mount.  The AZ lock on the head stays locked and I use the Feisol to move the mount in AZ.  It has a slightly dampened movement and can itself be locked with the panning base lock knob.

Now I can use this nice little mount in "manual" mode when ever I don't want or need the goto function.

If anyone else has tried other solutions that work I'd like to see what you've come up with.

Thanks for the idea!

I am interested in those rings though. They look very nice. Can you please tell me where did you get them.

Thanks for the idea! I intend to buy an az-gti, good to know there's a solution if I'm unhappy with the AZ.

This seems like a nice solution to fixing a poorly constructed AZ lock.   My AZ GTI works well when its locked but I don't feel confident using it in manual mode.  I am afraid of stripping the threads.
However the PB-70 Panning Base looks well built.  I like the option of using this mount in manual mode since I use the setup as my grab n go.

Thanks
