Hi guys.

I recently got an old Meade 826C telescope. It's a nice scope, but I'd like to find the manual for it. A member on another astronomy forum said I should ask here.

So does anyone have the manual, or know where I can find it?

Thanks!

Did Meade have an official manual for any version of 826?

I think so, but I just haven't found it yet.

No manual over at telescopeclassics.com but there is a

1978 reflector catalog with the 826:

I've an 826 with no manual also, but would enjoy seeing a copy of the instructions.  And for the life of me, I cannot figure out how the "Auxiliary R.A.Control for manual image centering (optional)" is used or operated on the telescope I have.  For if I try to twist that aluminum knob, I believe It would simply break with any attempt for "image centering" as there is no movement of anything with high torquing twists?
Has anyone actually understood that mechanic?

May never find one. It was a few pages made from copies stapled together. The manual RA override was pretty bad and all broke the motors. They were promptly discontinued.i wouldn't recommend using it cause motors are getting very hard to find.

I don't remember any manual with these when we made them. Perhaps a couple page description of collimating one. But that would be about it.

If if I had ordered one, I would not have asked for the clutch motor. Find yourself a drive corrector to adjust in ra. I've heard of people sawing the shaft off that motor, but that seems a bit drastic. Just don't use it.

I have an instruction manual for the Meade 6" & 8" reflecting telescopes.  It is 16 pages and dated 1978.   It covers the models 628, 618, 628F,  645, 635, 645F,  826, 816, 826F, 856 and 856F.  Also covers the equatorial mounts models 650 - 653, 850 - 853.

I'm pretty sure my old Meade DS-10 had the fine adjust shaft and it looked like

someone took a bolt cutter and clipped it off. No hole in the plastic drive cover

so my assumption was it was done at the factory.

So are you saying I shouldn't use the motor that's on the mount? Sorry, but I just got this scope, and was used to using a simple alt-altazimuth mount. So I don't really know a lot about equatorial mounts.

I think you're right.  It's also possible that some of those clutches were so tight they couldn't be used, so they were cut off and sold with scopes without the clutch motor option.

Are you referring to the knob on the top side of the clock drive housing? How is it supposed to work?

I have all 16 pages in a PDF, but have no idea what to do with a PDF.  I had to take a screen shot of the first page, convert to jpeg in Paint, edit in Photos, not doing the whole file and I don't get the full page doing it anyway.

None the less, I have the full factory 16 pages of this:

So, I have a Meade 826 w/the 853 EQ mount. My dad got it for me way back when it was only slightly used (late 80s/early 90s). Since I was pretty young, at the time, he used it way more than i did. One day he just stopped using it altogether. I got it from his house yesterday and brought it home. It needs to be completely taken apart (as much as I can) and cleaned. Unfortunately, I don't have the manual, my dad never did. Can someone PLEASE help me out by sending me a copy or a working link to one?

I sold my full restoration Meade 826, and that manual may have gone with it.

OK re read, I might have it on the comp as that PDF, but may not with it sold.

If I have it in a PDF, I'm not sure how to send it. I don't think it loads like a picture, or attaches.

Maybe more than a single email can handle?  Not sure how that works.

Wow!  Lots of Meade Newtonian interest today...

I have an original Meade StarFinder Instruction Manual that I'll scan to PDF if there's any interest.  I like the illustrated section on Newt collimation -- simple enough for even a redneck to figure it out.

Robert (clamchip):  A previous owner stuck 4 photocopied pages from what I think may be an Edmund book (the focuser looks like an Edscorp).  It has a guide to collimating a Newtonian, and lots of info for beginners on calculating focal ratio, magnification, etc.  I'll probably scan these, too, before I misplace them...

[I created a thread for this so it'll show up in the search engines.]

This is the SF mount:

There was (I have) the AC variant of that mount.  I too have a photocopied PDF of a/the manual somewhere, but I think its for the 8' & 10" models.  Not sure the 16" was included or had its own separate manual.

Wasn't there a 6" as well?

I would be very interested in a copy of the Meade Starfinder manual. I used to have a 10" Dob version and I'm feeling the... um.. inspiration to get another one (for old times' sake!)...

you should be able to just send it as an attached file. when you click on the "attach" button you should be able to just search for the file and add it just like you would a picture!

Ishtim,

I have one with the DC motor which has never functioned consistently. I'm thinking of replacing the DC motor with an AC one. Any chance you know, or could maybe check, what rpm the motor is?

John
