I am looking to replace my hand controller cable. The iOptron cable is 18$ but I can find telephone cables for about 4-5$ on amazon. I am wondering whether I need RJ11 or RJ12 for the HBX port. The documentation does not say much nor are there any specs for the cable on the iOptron page

I guess you will have to look how many wires you have and find out how they are connected. I would not risk to buy online. Don't you have a local storesqpecialised in electronics  in the neighbourhood who can assist you.

If the socket is broken you could cut it and attach an newone, but for that you need a special tool.

On my Ioptron IEQ30 pro the manual says it is RJ11, 6 wires, straight through , for the handbox and DEC.

An RJ12 connector is 6 position, 6 contact (6P6C). RJ11 is 6P4C. My CEM40 uses RJ12.

Then maybe it does not matter. Probably only four wires are used, because IEQ30 pro manual says Rj11 , still the ports have 6 contacts. The Go2Nova8408 (OP's controller for his mount) port seems to have 6 pin according to the manual i found  but does not say if it is RJ11 or RJ12.

Maybe a RJ12 cable is the 'safest' move

Yes. RJ12 does seem to be save. I guess you also have the 8408

EDIT. I checked by broken cable plug. There are only 4 wires with the left and rightmost slot empty for both sides.

So it is RJ11 I guess. I have to find a coiled cable though. Its backordered. I damaged my plug, so I guess I can buy a new plug and replace
