A 40mm 70* Pentax XW was more than that new....and that was 5 or 6 years ago.

Yes, for more complex designs with much larger apparent fields of view.

It's called building perceived value into the product by putting a high price tag on it.

Thus feeding confirmation bias. P.T. Barnum would be proud.

Note that the ad says it is just one eyepiece for $500 and you need two!

Package Contents:

    (1) Kowa 50X Wide Angle Eyepiece TSE-9WH

Gotta keep up with their chief competitors, Leica, etc. If the price tag is higher, it's got to be better, right?!

I met a gent who had a set of the Prominars and a couple of pairs of eyepieces. My response was "I've got to get me a set of these!"

But, it's the usual problem. Champagne taste and beer income.

This is an eyepiece with a nominal field of view of 71 degrees.  Its a proprietary format so you're stuck.. And Kowa does make good optics.

List price of TE-9WH is 20,000 yen per eyepiece in Japan.

You can find a pair of TE-9WHs street price about 38,000 yen, $350 per a pair.
