Hi

May be the dumbest question. Ive just got my first guide camera and first test to try and use it with PHD2. Does the mount need to be star aligned before PHD can work.... can i not just power my mount up pick a random star, and PHD will track it?

I have the feeling NO, and the mount should be tracking and PHD just pulses corrections to keep it on track???

Thanks

yes the mount must be tracking. if it wasn't tracking the stars you would try to click on would be moving very fast across the field of view. calibrating phd would be impossible.

and of course it should be polar aligned as good as possible to get the best results.

That does make sense. Thats 2 hours i wont get back 😂. It was locking on a star and starting to guide as i could hear the drives pulsing but the star kept drifting out to fast.

Your mount must be Polar aligned as close as you can get it and tracking.  What's the mount?

Search YouTube for both - Telescope Polar Alignment and PHD Guide 2
