Fellas:

As a fellow skywatcher looking for deals, I came across this one for today.

Nexstar 8SE for $679.

6SE for $560.

5SE for $407.

4SE for $339.

It's at a very prominent online retailer we've all bought from.   Not sure of the rules here if we're allowed to post scopes from other sites so I won't mention where.

Which would you get for backyard planetary/moon observing and taking to remote camping trip sites?

I don't know of any TOS here that forbids posting links to retailers. My quick search of the usual suspects did not find those prices.

Thanks, Steve.

In that case, it's at Amazon.  The prices I quoted include the 15% cash back if you have and use the Amazon Prime Visa Card.  I'm not sure if it's a targeted promotion but it surely shows for me on the product page.

The 8" is a great deal at amazon in Canada too.

I think I might just pick one up for camping a lot more compact than my  EQ mount.

I saw that one as well.  I'm not sure how this one compares to the 5SE SCT at $407.   I'm assuming the SLT is a lesser line of scope?  Are the optics worse?   5SE is 7 pounds heavier.

The 127 is a Maksutov-Cassegrain, so it will have a thick corrector lens. That would account for a heavier scope.

The 5SE is actually the heavier one.  From my searching it seems this is due to the fact that the 5SE has a better mount and a little beefier overall compared to the 127.   I'd assume the specs they list is for the overall package.

I tried to like it, but the 127Mak was just too darn shakey for me. That's why I returned it and went for the 6SE...

For visual observing I would go with the 8SE. 8" of aperture will delight from dark sites.

Except that it's now 200 bucks more than the Cyber Monday sale...

Or in the case of the Cardholder's extra 15% back on top (also dead now), $320.   Great deal, and thanks to all on this board with the advice!  I'm excited to get started.  grin.gif
