Can the intensifier tube be swapped between a PVS-7 and a Mod3?

I was just wondering what “afocal” means... literally. Is it short for something?

No. It is a word that actually means "not focused."  For photography it is a term for an optical system where the object and image points lie at infinity.  Not short for anything really.  So not shorthand like "Apo".    It is just the name used in photography where you capture an image though an eyepiece rather than one that is formed at the focal plane of the objective.
