Makes sense. On M51 the tidal tails around the companion seem a bit less pronounced than at lower f/ratio though, or is that just the wrong impression?

Most likely it’s the different approach to taking the pics. See a close up from around 12 months ago with a faster f4 ratio versus last night with f6, same scope, same tube but different phone camera/app.

Can't see the tidal tails on either, they're left of the image. But the low contrast detail between the arms is better on the new image.

The tidal tails are just about visible on my latest image, but I have to use my imagination on the one from a year ago

This was my frigid attempt at IC 434 and NGC 2024 on Saturday night. I was having a hard time with the focus as it seems to look better on the phone than in the final image. This was 10x 1 second exposures with ISO set at around 50 using the Astroshader app on an iPhone 16.

A collection of some of my images taken with a gen 3 pvs 7 . mx10130d omni 7 , not bad for a $500 tube which looked to be essentially brand new as of last year when I got it.

For the pics with an Ha filter and scope, I was using nightcap app on an iphone 13 pro, and the scope was a 9.25" reduced tracked on an eq6. The pvs 7 was in prime focus. bortle 7 outside of detroit mi
The m51 picture was a video stack using the videostack app in the app store, 8" f/6 manual dobsonian with the pvs 7 in prime focus. dark skies bortle 4 . my gf's iphone 15 pro max recording in hdr 1080p 60 (oops)
The barnards loop picture was also a stack from 1s worth of video. 7nm Ha svbony filter, iphone 16 pro with stock camera app 1080p 30.
