Hi Guys,

A quick plea for assistance please...

CGEM with Nexstar.

The left and down arrow direction buttons have both, suddenly, stopped working.

The handbox still responds correctly to software commands so the mount/handset still works.

Is this a known problem?

Is it likely to be hardware or firmware?

I've removed the rubber keypad/button instert and cleaned the contacts.  I can't see any dirt on the actual circuit board.

Any help appreciated!

Have you tried factory reset?

Might help.

Have you tried heavy pressure on the buttons? Mine which is not old and has seen little use has one direction that I have to cram it down pretty good to get it to go, so clearly a contact issue.

Thanks guys.  Until the buttons stopped completely they did need 'heavy pressure' so perhaps this is mechanical rather than anything else.

I'll take another look.  Maybe that heavy pressure has deformed the pc board or something...

It could be they just need some cleaning. I had a similar issue with my Nexstar controller. Carefully take apart, and remove the rubber keypad pad. Wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol and let it dry. You can also use a little alcohol on the circuit board contacts that the buttons press on. Just make sure to let it THOROUGHLY dry before powering it up. Mine's worked great ever since.

Common problem as Ericco79 mentioned... Meade's autostar was probably the worst about this.   Haven't had this problem with the nexstar yet but expecting it any time now. Easy fix but be gentle with those ribbon cables.

Hi Guys,

thanks for the (reassuring) advice.

I took another look and, as you say, there was oxidation and dirt on the contacts.

I still wasn't completely happy as I still needed very firm presurre so I padded the back of the circuit board to help stiffen and support it.

It now works perfectly with a light touch.

Thankful that it was just a 'mechanical' issue.

I much appreciate your help.

Regards
