My old CG5 advgt definitely sounded like I got a fresh roast of Geisha Costa Rica.

I wish there were more slewing sound examples. Which ones are the quietest mounts out there for less than 2k? I have a balcony which happens to bounce sound everywhere.

On that note... what's making that noise? Can we DIY gear mufflers?

My EQ6-R Pro is pretty darn quiet. The Skywatcher AZ EQ6 is as well.

The ones with belt drive are pretty quiet.

Apart from Skywatcher iOptron CEM mounts too.

I agree with the 2 posters before me.  I have a SW EQ6-R Pro, and it is very quiet at any speed.  My understanding is that the older models didn't have belt drive and are significantly louder.  A new one is about $1500-$1600, but you can save a couple $100 if you wait for a SW sale.

My CEM60-EC is silent compared to the CGX I gave away...well, not silent, but you get the picture.

Well, if the OP is pleased with his CG5 Advance GT, except for the noise, and it easily carries what he needs it to carry, I think the Successor to that mount, the AVX, would be just perfect.  Every time I use one of those I'm amazed that it is based on the same 'CG-5' design, since it is SO much quieter.

I'd say Celestron's mounts are the loudest.   Servo motors seem noisier than stepper motors to my ears.  The iOptron, Skywatcher and Orion mounts are among the quietest in your price range IMO.

I set up my EQ6 then my AVX for visual. The AVX could wake the dead I think.

I used to feel bad about it thinking it was disturbing my neighbors, but as I'm fighting gradients from their blinding back porch lights, maybe I should shop for a louder mount?

IEQ30 PROis very quiet even at high slew speed. It was needed. i have a small yard with neighbours, It think they cannot hear even with open window.. I checked from 3 m away, you can hardly hear it.It was one of the many reasons i chose a IEQ30 PRO

The former IEQ30 , i believe it had servo motors , is quite different....

I don't think my neighbours would have liked the IEQ30....there is YouTube movie, there you can hear it clearly how noisy that one is

Sitting less than 3 feet from it, I have to visually observe my iOptron CEM25P mount to verify slewing -- 'cause I can't hear it doing so.

I mostly did that the first couple of months I had it...since then, I operate it from inside, and don't worry about it.  It's never failed to slew...:)

Ok, this is a video of my CGX before I found out what was making the noise in the RA. In the beginning when I first slew the mount, that is the normal noise of a CGX with no issues. Keep in mind that the cover is off and the noise seems loud but it really is very quiet compared to my CG5 AST. Now after I fixed the issue that was making the slight noise you hear and after reassembling  it is very quiet. I will post another video so to compare but the CGX is a quiet mount. Of course not as quiet as an AP or Tak or the like, but, very quiet than most in the price range. Also there are ways to make them even more stealthy.....

Me, too.

I can't even hear the voice in the computer telling me I'm going to lose my alignment, or "Shutting Down..."

(But it scares the rats in the ivy...)

I believe that Meade makes the loudest coffee grinders. You can here them a long ways away at star parties. I have one and the neighbor has complained about it.

I have 2 Atlas EQ-G mounts (aka EQ6). One of them has the Rowan belt drive mod and that does make it quieter. The EQ6-R is basically the same belt drive mechanism as this.

Here is a video of the same EQ6 mount with the Rowan belt drive mount.

Most Celestron mounts let you set a custom rate 9 so that the slews are slower and quieter. So that may be something to try.

The Avx has a short tripod, even with a C8, the tripod feels short. You can't fully extend the legs on the tripod because they have to be pushed in about 6" otherwise, the legs wobble horribly since their nothing to grab the lower legs to secure them.

Its an awesome mount for accuracy, it just needs a pier option for observing standing up.

I use mine on my G11 Tripod, with a 12" extension for added height for my 900mm and 1200mm  refractors.

My CG5 is loud when slewing to an object but is quite when tracking, I can live with that
