I have a LX90 with Audiostar controller with patched firmware A4s4. I was doing a test run in polar mode when I went through the menu and in "Setup" under "Telescope"  I found this item: "Germ. Mnt. Adj.", when I press "Enter" it just gives a beep and nothing more. Does anyone  know what it is for? Is it part of the new A4S4 firmware or something the patch added ?

Hey Piet,

Just a guess but I'm thinking it's "German Mount Adjustment" for German Equatorial Mounts. Possibly for polar alignment or such. Since you're on an LX90 which is a Alt / Az mount it won't apply in your case. But the audiostar controller can be used on both Alt / Az mounts and equatorial mounts.

I'm not sure if this helps or not but hopefully it points you in the right directions.

Errico is correct, it is for adjusting a GEM mount

It should normally get cut from the menus when you select a mount

I know Meade have done big changes to the mount selecting routines

in A4S4 but didnt see that quirk.

Thanks for the quick response!

Yes its not a GEM mount but I am in polar mode(not Az/Alt) on a wedge and  I thought it could be something useful. If I did have a GEM mount what would I do with it ? The other question is the 3 star alignment : will that work on a LX90 and what could I benefit?

Sounds like they have stuffed something up in rearranging the code.

The menu in question should only appear for true GEMs, not Polar forks.

The 3 star wont work and wont benefit you with a fork

Basically, the 3 star does a std 2 star align using stars on the same side of the meriden.

It then flips for the third star, and that error is then used as a crude approximation of cone error.

Ok I get it. The fork mount cannot point slightly east or west when the mount is pointing to the celestial pole which would result in cone error but it could be pointing slightly north or south when I am pointing to my polar home position before I do a 2 star alignment, how do I guard against that  ?

Any North/South ( ie DEC ) error when doing a polar align, is irrelevant ( as is having a slightly wrong RA )

In a 2 star, when you centre the first star, the mount does a synch and it then measures the error between there and the second star, ie where you started is effectively irrelevant, other than to assist in getting you close to the first star.

PS The three star alignment and  Germ. Mnt. Adj does appear in the menu when a LX90 is selected but does nothing : both just beeps. So you right its just a  quirk. Something that could be removed with a patch??
