Hello,

Has anyone used a scuba tank carrier to aid in transporting and/or mounting their refractor OTA?  Something like these...

https://www.amazon.c...duct/B000TGPD66

https://www.amazon.c...duct/B00LOX8QUS

https://www.amazon.c...duct/B00DCGQK4E

Some appear that they would be small enough but others I'm not sure.  I have a 5" diameter OTA.

Just wondering if others have tried this and had success.

No. But it looks like it could work.

Gives me ideas for my sewing machine and some Velcro straps. smirk.gif

I never used a scuba tank carrier but there are some very nice straps/handles available from Astronomy Shoppes.com.  They are called Scope-Totes and they make them for various telescope ota’s.  I use them for lugging around a 10” Newtonian.  There are also straps with handles available that are designed to carry packages/boxes.

The ones from Astronomy-Shoppe.com and the Easy-Carry Wrap-It straps are both single straps with their own handles.  I would need two and then would have two handles.  I was hoping to have two straps with one handle.  This way I could place the tube on the saddle with one hand and tighten the bolt with the other.  I tried this one but it didn't fit.  Even though someone in the comments said it would fit a 5.5" diameter cylinder, it was way too big.  There was less than an inch of Velcro that mated.

The quest continues...

I understand what you want.  How about adding some Velcro to the one that you linked to on Amazon.  It would need to be sewn on but it would reduced the "clamping" range.  Also, The Astronomy Shoppe mentions that they do custom work.  Try contacting them and ask if they can supply you with what you're looking for.  It can't hurt to ask.  Good luck with your quest.

Yes, I have a scuba-tank carrier on two of my homemade refractors. Love 'em!

I either used Velcro to wrap the excess strap around the scope or simply cut it off and sealed the cut.

Very handy and useful as well as light.

Check the size of the tank that the carrier will hold to determine if it will fit your OTA, and see if you can determine the length of the handle. I have the loops around my OTAs outside the rings so they won't slide too close together.

If you aren't using rings on your scope, find a way to tighten the loops to keep them in place so they won't slide together too close to each other.

I never thought of it until you mentioned it, but since I'm a SCUBA diver and have those tank carriers, I love the idea!

I use one on my 10" Dob.  Two 36" Velcro straps extend the reach of the tank carrier straps.
