NGC 1857 is a fairly rich, but small open cluster in Auriga. In the heart, the bright orange "lucida" really stands out. When zooming in, a fine spray of dim stars become visible around it. Best viewed with a moderate/large telescope under a dark sky.

NGC 2281 is of a different type; it's larger, looser and consists of much brighter members. The center is marked by a perfectly shaped rhombus (of which one star is a double). Some six bright stars are floating to the east of it and about ten stars (in an arrow shape) are to the north of it and point to a bright yellow star just outside the cluster. It's nicknamed "Broken Heart Cluster", but I don't really see that. A perfect cluster to visit with small/moderate equipment under a less than perfect sky.

Hi Martijn,

These are exquisite sketches with equally detailed descriptions. That bright orange star in NGC 1857 sounds only gorgeous, and your rendering of it is amazing - very well done.

Clear skies,

Darren.
