Gil,

Nice set up.

Steve T

Looking good – I mean the scope of course.

Bought mine in 1978. Owned one for 11 years. Mine did a nice job on deep sky and the moon. However, my next scope was an Astro-Physics 6" refractor.

Here are a couple of lunar sketches made with the DX8 from back in the day.

Bob

Bob,

A little OT, but very nice drawings.

Thanks for sharing.

It has been over 35 years since I’ve owned the full set.

Here's mine, the evening after I bought it rom Chuck last summer, at my wife's property south of Milford, Utah.

Table had to do, as it was the only thing I had with me to put it on.  Wish I had kept the GP tripod I'd sold several years ago.

I think the next best thing would be one of those old gray metal office desks, like the one I have in my office at JPL.  That would make for a sturdy support, plus it'd be comfortable to sit in a chair at the eyepiece with a Skalnate on one side and eyepieces in a drawer on the other.

Lovely scope, mount, and tripod Gil. The best scopes are the ones that get used. :)

That it does, Terra.

At least I’m not in a green shirt and yellow pants this time.

By the way, if someone has this bearing cover with the red Dynamax sticker, let me know if you’d consider a trade or sale.

This one, Gil?

I don't think I have an extra but will look.

That’s the sticker, but I need the one on the other fork arm bearing cover.

They are somewhat difficult to remove, but just the sticker would definitely work.

Excellent!  Looking good, Gil!

And back at you from across the pond (not a current picture as there is sunshine!)

To answer a previous question about my Dyna 8

Serial number.  4372....

Why is it black?  Don't know exactly, but I suspect it was painted as I found a trace of blue under the mount.

Doesn't matter anyhow as they all look the same in the dark.....lol

Congratulations!  A very nice setup. The happy "Everlast" expression on your face says it all. Will check and see if I have a suitable Dynamax fork arm bearing cover on my parts mount and private message you if I do.

I know that scope Gill, It has very decent optics.. in fact better than 90% of the Meade 2080's from 1980-1986!

What a great looking telescope. I have always liked the blue Dynamax setup. If Criterion had not disappeared I wonder what they would have been offering now.

Yes, the finder on the pictured scope is original. We had both straight thru and 90 degree finders. When the finders arrived, we took them apart and had the tubes painted grey to match the Dynamax tube.

Sometimes we didn’t bother doing that, and just shipped white finders. Looked better anyway, imho.

Found an old photo from 1985. Me aligning the finder on my 1978 DX-8 on a cloudy day. Today I'm "grayer" than the DX-8.

Gotta disagree with you, Gil.  I loved all the shades of gray on my DX8 -- one of the prettiest scopes I've ever owned:

Definitely my prettiest Large Scope.

The white finders looked better when we painted the finder brackets black.

I’ve said this before - it surprised me when any two Dynamax scopes are identical.
