I am working on a project and need the diameter of the front lens section after the hood is extended. I couldn't find that dimension on the net, only the filter size.  If someone who owns one could put a micrometer on it, that would be great.

I know this is not really what you asked for, but…..:)
Of course this link has no dimension.

And the non-ED, while having a drawing, no dimension either.

If you are going to take a guess, I have an AF-D version.    Looking at it and the nonED drawing, they look “similar” and both have a 72mm filter dia.   Not the exactness you were looking for, but……
75.0mm is the OD of the barrel that holds the filter, and slightly over 76.0mm is the ID of the hood that slides over it.  I say slightly over, since my hood as a fuzzy material applied to it.  The OD of the Hood is 78.6mm.

Thanks for those, I found those specs also. I use this website http://www.photosynt...n/serialno.html  Since this is a heavy lens, I am looking to make a 3-D printed support ring for it.  The section that I need the measurement for is where the ring would go.

I have this lens, I could give you the measurement later tonight, the outside diameter of the lens hood right?

The portion of the lens body that the hood slides across.

Awesome.  Thank you very much. If I can figure out how to make a 3d printer file I'll post it.

Put some way in your design to loosen it easily because you will have to have the front one on the sky end loose so the lens barrel can move while focusing.
