Advanced weather forecasting for North American astronomers

Hi fellow astronomers,

I've gotten a surprising amount of email over the past day inquiring about Apple's purchase of Dark Sky weather service and if it will impact Astrospheric. So many that I updated Astrospheric's FAQs this morning and figured a post here would be useful.  The quick answer is - no, this won't impact Astrospheric.  While it isn't great to see Apple pull Dark Sky from Android and plan the eventual shut down of Dark Sky's weather APIs, Astrospheric is its own data processor and doesn't rely on a 3rd party company's APIs to work with data.

However, it is worth noting apps which say "Powered by Dark Sky" or "Powered by Forecast" will likely see changes as those developers find new APIs to gather and repackage weather data.  Apps that I use such as Clear Outside and Good to Stargaze have these statements so I'm not sure what closing off the Dark Sky weather APIs will mean to them.  The fact is that thousands of apps use Dark Sky's weather APIs, so it'll be interesting to see where they end up going for data in the future.

Clear Skies,
-Dan
