In today's Spaceweather.com, there's an interesting article about "Where The Power Goes Out" during a 100-year-frequency Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) event.  The article is based on this analysis entitled "A 100‐year Geoelectric Hazard Analysis for the U.S. High‐Voltage Power Grid."  For continuity (since the article will come off of their front page tomorrow), here are screenshots of the article:

The economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic may pale in comparison to the possible long-term damage that a strong CME could cause on the nation's electric power grid....  sweaty.gif

The article (with hyperlinks) has been archived here.

Think about what modern life would be like with no electricity.  If you think that the COVID-19 lockdowns are problematic, it could be far worse with:

(1) No computers.

(2) No electricity to pump fuel.

(3) Perhaps no way to refrigerate food.

(4) Etc.   shocked.gif

Securing our grid should be the #1 infrastructure priority of the country. This should be where the $1,000,000,000+ be spent if congress appropriates such a massive spending bill in the near future, as has been suggested. I'm afraid conventionalist can only think of things of concrete for infrastructure. A CME and the grid, nah. But let it go down ... our country/world will go into chaos--immediately.

"Here's What Would Happen if a Solar Storm Wiped Out Technology as We Know It" --  "Conservative estimates suggest we could be looking at up to US$2 trillion of damage in the first year of such a calamity, with a recovery effort that could take a decade for the world to pull off...."
