I'm proud to announce the next major release of Nightshift for Android. This release builds on the feedback on previous releases, thanks for all suggestions, tips and bug reports!

Nightshift provides worldwide stargazing forecast, a celestial event calendar and location-specific observing advice for over 16,000 deep-sky objects. You can download Nightshift for free from Google Play!

Nightshift 0.15 has the following new features:

  • Redesigned dashboard, new tabs to quickly switch between current stargazing conditions, forecast and celestial events
  • Real-time, animated infrared cloud cover satellite images to anticipate upcoming clouds both day and night
  • Improved deep-sky database, including the full NGC & IC catalogues from the OpenNGC project, now including over 16,000 deep-sky objects
  • Improved twilight diagram, better distinction between conditions with and without weather forecast available
  • Help texts for all cards on the dashboard
  • A lot of optimisations and background improvements for a smoother user experience

The new release of Nightshift is available for free from Google Play, download here.

Suggestions are, as always, much appreciated. Let me know what you think!

A recent Google Maps SDK issue may cause crashes on Nightshift 0.15 and earlier when initialising the observing location map.

In anticipation of the patched Play Services from Google, I released a hotfix in version 0.15.1 that corrects the issue. Update is available here.

One interesting "issue" I've found with Nightshift is that it shows that dates that are further out as having excellent conditions for observing, when I think actually the forecast is just not available that far out.  I'd rather know the forecast isn't available.

Thanks for your feedback! That's correct, Nightshift calculates observing conditions for any night in the past and future. If no weather forecast is available, the conditions are based on length of darkness and interfering moonlight only. This helps planning observing nights in the (distant) future, for example suitable nights around new moon.

If you've updated to the latest release, observing conditions for nights without weather forecast are indicated with a warning that the actual conditions depend on the weather, and this is indicated on the twilight diagram, too.

I've updated to the latest release, and I see that warning.

I'm gradually rolling out the new Nightshift 0.15.3 update to all devices over the next days. Some highlights:

  • New summary tab for conditions and upcoming events at a glance
  • Notifications for celestial events
  • Observing conditions notifications for the current device location (beta!)

Notifications can now be enabled with one tap from the dashboard, no need to enable them from the Settings first.

Download the latest release here.

Questions, suggestions? Let me know!
