Actually there's a bunch of different 60mm Celestrons.

Orange, Black, Blue/Gray available in Alt-Az and GEM with too many variations to say or keep track of.

Probably the most common was the blue/gray alt-az Cometron CO-60, but even some of those came on a Polaris mount (CO-60E).

attachicon.gifCelestron C60.jpg

Here's my Vixen made C60 (OTA only), on a Unitron mount and it might just be the best 60mm I have.

This model came standard with a 1.25" visual back. A .965" VB is on it in this photo

because eye pieces and diagonals were being swapped with other scopes during a shoot out.

I had no idea that Vixen made any of the C60s or that some came with Polaris mounts. Yours is a very nice example. Mine is black with a plastic .965 focuser on a yoke mount. KD emblem on the underside of the focuser.

Just be aware that somewhere in the mix (maybe late 90s/early 2000s), they went from Vixen made in Japan, to made in China. I have a Firstscope 80az with a black wood tripod. It looks very similar to the ones above, but it is Made in China. Still a solid 3" scope and would do well for a nice beginner scope, just probably not as collectable.

Everything that Terra said about the C-80 is true, she had one of the best, but they all are good.

It was around 96-97.  It was a big down grade for sure from the Vixen made stuff. The first CG5 and 4 were total junk vs the SP and Polaris mounts.  After the CG5 got the bigger tripod legs they started making the CG5 better somewhat.

Wanted: need and C80 objective lens cap, but asking here (on an existing C80 thread) if anyone knows what rubber lid for Folger's coffee or whatever will fit?

I know there are threads on repurposed hacks on CN, but we need a hack to find it.

I used a raisin tin lid. I will try and locate more details. They were generic from Aldi's, if that helps. Fit right over the dew shield.

I put a proper wanted ad in the Classifieds and have a lead on possible original part.

But, in case that falls through and just good info to get out there, continue.

I was going to say, who or whom or what is Aldi, and behold, there are three within a 20 minute drive of me.

To be fair, I avoid chain supermarkets. (Food snobbery)

I know this is an older thread, but I’m wondering what my Celestron Firstscope 80 might be worth. It was made in Japan and the scope and optics are close to mint condition.
thanks

Vixen Polaris Mount

Are you sure the Firstscope 80 EQ was a Vixen made scope on a Vixen Polaris mount? I remember the C80 was Vixen made on a Polaris mount. But thought the Firstscope 80 EQ was one of the models after Celestron switched to a Chinese producer.

That's a first scope 80 on a Polaris mount made by Vixen for Celestron WAY before China got involved!

I believe you are correct.

The instruction manual (dated 1991) for my SP-C80 (Super Polaris) shows the Firstscope as a 80 Alt-Az and the others (SP-C80, SP-C102, and SP-C102F) as Super Polaris Refractors
