I would like to hear from anyone who has purchased and received a new TEC 140FL recently, i.e., in the past year or so.  You can send a private message to me, if you prefer.  What I would like to know is, are you fully satisfied with the 140FL optics?  Do you have any complaints or problems?  My understanding is that, beginning two or three years ago, TEC has new employees making the optics for its telescopes.

I thank you in advance.

That’s the problem with giving test results, someone is gonna be unhappy.

Yep. I understand that’s why many mirror opticians don’t provide specs with their mirrors anymore. Back in the dim, dark pre internet days it was standard practice to get a spec sheet. But in the internet age, there’s too many disappointed people who receive a mirror that’s only 99% perfect instead of that person who posted about their 100% perfect sample.

Back in the day, Thomas Back told me that a disgruntled customer sent his whole 100mm f8

refractor back because he learned that someone had a higher strehl number than he did. That was whenTMB included test reports with each telescope.  It stopped soon after IIRC.

People who do this should be charged with identifying the Strehl 0.978 scope amongst those with Strehl 0.985 just by looking through the scopes at some suitable target using any eyepiece they want. If they fail, they should be made to keep their scope and pay a healthy fee for the testing event.

Isn't there more to an outstanding objective than just the Strehl?  I suppose if when evaluating objectives everything else is equal, then the Strehl becomes important.

Do you think every lens set made by the same maker will be consistent in regards to all the other aberrations not including Strehl?  Could one set have a ridiculously high Strehl but the polishing is not as good or something else is not as good.  Would that show in the Strehl reading?  Would the lens set with the highest Strehl be most desirable over another set with lower Strehl if the set with higher Strehl had other minor aberrations but the one with lower Strehl was otherwise perfect?

Thanks, Kent

Bingo, Kent. To me figure and polish are of paramount consideration. Very important for high resolution, and especially low contrast, features.

I'm considering trashing my TMB-LZOS 152mm since finding out that my friend's scope has a .99 Strehl and mine is just a bit less......

Lowell Observatory has a Tec 140FL and many of the workers there, say it is their favorite scope.  It is amazing.

I knew that some poor sap would be willing to take it off his hands, but not me! That's not because I think the scope is a slouch, it's because my pockets have no depth.

Chesterguy: I notice you have an 8 f7 with Zambuto optics. Can you tell me anything about the quality of high power  viewing  with it.

I'm obviously not Chesterguy . . .

But I think the line says he has a F5.7, not F7.

But, I do have a 8" F7 with a Zambuto mirror. And it's superb--eats up power, and thin quartz is ready to go quickly.

You will be probably getting it in 2022.  Mine was #68 and it has been moved back to early 2021.  I said to heck with that and asked for a refund of my deposit.  I don't mind putting money down for the 6 month wait Yuri told me when ordering.  But I do mind holding my money and pushing it out a year from the original date if not more to an unknown date.  If you are doing what he is doing just have a wait list like AP and require no money to hold your spot.  Because I don't think it is cool to do that to customers.....and then make you wait until EXACTLY 30 days before they cut the check to refund me my money.  So don't get your hopes up.

I was going to order the 140fl when they first came out but decided to order the ed from the last run. I'm glad I did. It's beautiful and I only waited 6 months.
