I've been told that white is the worst or most distracting color to wear when birding.  It probably doesn't make that much difference, especially for casual birding, but it sort of makes sense to me that bright white will stand out more.  So I usually don't wear camouflage but I do try to avoid white and wear more subdued or natural colors for my bird photography, where I often really am "stalking" and trying to get much closer to birds than they generally tolerate.  I firmly believe what matters more than color is motion.  I move as slowly as possible and then try to be still and not move at all if I can.  Ideally with patience the birds will come to me.  I know a guy who leads groups on bird watching field trips and he tells his groups, "don't point at the bird."  Some people give him a hard time about that, but over time he observed that sometimes a bird that had been happily letting a group watch it suddenly flies off right at the moment when one of the people points at it, and it happened too often for him to ignore or discount it.  With both color and motion, we're talking about a matter of probability; sometimes they don't matter.  If you're using a green TV 85 as a spotting scope on birds, it probably matters little while you're using it, because you are usually too far away from the birds.  But if you're going to walk around with it, a green scope might be a little less distracting than a bright white one.

Dave

Well that clears it up.  And you're hearing it from a very good source folks, the owner of that thar green CFF 92 mm f/6.9 #001.  I am not worthy!

Both my TV85 and TV101 are white, yet when someone mentions the TV85 I envision the green color.

This I expect. I wish TV still did the Bizarro black bino viewer as an option.

Odd you should say that.  I do too.  I think because TV advertised it in green a lot.

Not to mention the writing on TV eyepieces is green.

Oh I know about that.  The writing is green to keep from scaring the birds.

I think TeleVue came up with the green color because Godzilla is green and if you ever encounter Godzilla while bird watching Godzilla will  relate to you and therefore won’t eat you. Just  my humble opinion. lol.gif

Once upon a time they had this green/white combo. I was appalled but I'm sure someone loved it!

I have an old Aladdin thermos with the same green paint job.

It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.

My gosh, you are correct - they are very close.  This is too funny.

Nice fit and finish on both but the cool down time on the Aladdin is noticeably longer.

Doug, took note that your living room walls are also green.  Not Televue/Stanley green, but green nonetheless.  A favorite color perhaps?  smile.gif

Actually, the walls are light grey - must be how the iPhone registered the color temperature. The TV76 and the Aladdin look about right though.

Ron Bee’s TV102, which he christened The Light Cup, was this color scheme. Ron’s observing reports were cool long before such became cool!

Ah!  I remember Ron Bee’s “Light Cup” reports.  His “evangelizing” got me hooked on APO’s.

BTW - your posts and experiences with a TV-85 got me hooked on TV-85’s many moons ago.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
