Hello all,

How would I go about replacing the focuser on my skywatcher ED80 refractor? Would this focuser https://www.bintel.c...?v=322b26af01d5 work?

Thanks

You need to know whether the new focuser mounts inside or outside the tube. And then you need to know your tube diameter. There are also replacement focusers on ebay.

Agena Optical (online store) is pretty good about listing what scopes work with their GSO focusers. You may want to check their website.

Unfortunately, I can't get a direct link to the compatibility list to work, but the following search term for Google lists the correct page as its top hit (copy and paste the entire quoted line into your search bar, then check out the first hit from the search):

Having found the Agens table I would say No.

The one in the link says 88mm, the Agena table says the 80ED (Skywatcher ??) mates to the GSO96. Which presumably means a 96mm fitting.

If what I read is right and if I am right then you need this one 96-Focuser, which is A$249 so quite a bit more.

What is wrong with the supplied focuser?

That is dual speed.

I see Bintel have a button to "Ask an Expert"

Try scopestuff- any reason you want a Bintel Crayford?  I got my 96mm GSO (an R&P, Scopestuff branded) for about $180 (the 'special' one with some sort of additional rigidity support?).  They also list some of the scopes each model works on, he'll also get back to you pretty quick if you ask him a question.

The OP doesn't list a location but Bintel appears to be in Australia. That might have some bearing on it.

You need this one: https://www.bintel.c...?v=322b26af01d5

This will also fit: https://www.firstlig...refractors.html

I'm pretty sure the 'Bintel' is a GSO. I've had all of them on the ST102 at some stage.

MoonLite also have a focuser that fits the ED80 and ST102.

Agreed. It's the same as the Scopestuff GSO I just mounted on my ED100, and it's fantastic! I don't see it in the ad, but the focuser travel range is 80 mm, which is good but it will be much less than your stock focuser.

Also note that you'll have to buy a new finder shoe if you want it attached to the focuser like you old one is.
