Hi,  I have used files from this site to make several small Bahtinov masks for my smaller scopes and they work great.  http://astrojargon.n...ookieSupport=1

I just make them from stiff card and have a moderate life cycle.  I want to make a mask for my 14" Newt, just to perfect focus when I'm doing a bit of afocal Lunar imaging.  I was thinking in the first case, it would be much easier to make a smaller mask that would fit over an aperture mask (which I also haven't made) rather than a mask for the full aperture.  Will it work?

Cheers

It will work, but obviously it will block a  ton of light.  At that focal length however, it will probably not be a big deal.

I should have said I would remove the aperture mask after focussing and image with the full aperture.  Don't understand the focal length reference though, could you explain more? cheers

At focal lengths above 500mm its typically a breeze to focus a bahtinov on bright stars, slow aperture or not
