I have been pulling my hair out trying to get one of the 4ucac catalogs to work with Cartes du Ciel.

 

I downloaded the latest version. I can open CDC and it works just fine.

 

I have downloaded the 4ucac zip file for the northern hemisphere and unzipped it to extract into the same "CIEL" folder where the program is in my computer.

 

Then, witih CDC running, I click on the SETUP tab and choose CATALOG.

 

I follow all the instructions in HELP after I click on the CATGEN tab.

 

I am not 100% what I am supposed to do when OPENING "input catalog files". 

 

I must be doing something wrong...

 

Any help would be appreciated.

 

I wish there was a YouTube I could, step by step, but I could not find one.

 

This must be easy, once you know exactly what to do. It is NOT easy when you don't.

 

I go thru all the steps I think I am supposed to do and get a message saying: Required Field Missing.

I put the /ucac4 and /ucac4-streak directories in C:\Program Files\Ciel\cat

 

Go to Setup - Catalog in the menu.

 

Go to the Catalog tab, and hit "Add" button at the bottom.

 

I select the "ucac4" folder in the list and hit "Ok"

 

I then click the red dot in front of the catalog listing to turn it on, it turns green.

As simple as that sounds, I do not know -- at least I do not know EXACTLY -- what you mean by a "directory".

 

After unzipping the zip file to a folder, I end up with two sub-folders:  /ucac4 and /ucac4-streak.

 

Is that what you mean by 'a directory' ???

 

The program I have for CDC does not ask for a folder (or directory), it ask for a FILE ....

 

What FILE am I supposed to upload into CATGEN ???

 

This is what is looks like on my computer:

 

 

Notice that I have to input "files" -- not directories.

 

I have tried loading in all the files contained within the many sub-folders (lot of work to do that !!!). But that doesn't work. I get the "REQUIRE field missing" error message after filling in all the field on the following pages of CATGEN.

 

The /ucac4-streak folder contained on odd looking file after all the sub-folders. It is labeled:

 

4uc.hdr

 

If I upload that file and only that file, I can proceed thru the rest of the pages and get to the point where I can "BUILD". 

 

That then creates about 50 *.dat files in the folder containing the two sub-folders:  /ucac4 and /ucac4-streak. Besides those, there is one file labeled:

 

nh.hdr

 

I can ADD that file in the dialogue box and click APPLY // OK.

 

Everything seems to work when I do it that way, but I don't see the "extra stars" when looking at a chart.

Go to the catalog page and click Add

 

 

The directory is a list of file names. Also called a file list or catalog. Go to the ucac4 folder and select the highlighted file.

 

 

Go back to the catalog page and turn it on.

Why didn't I think of that ???

 

So simple. 

 

I was running around in circles trying to use the CATGEN button.

 

Anyway, it works. Perfectly.

Hi all, I guess I am in the slow learner's class. I have tried what has been suggested and it does not work. I am not sure why not but I have tried the Cat Gen also and that does not work either.

 

Even though I get a green light on the button for the catalogue I am not able to get  a UCAC4 star to come up on the screen.
