Is sketching literally drawing what you see in the scope or is it a projection from the eyepiece onto a piece of paper and traced.

I assume sketching is based on drawings the early astronomers made from their observations?

Thanks,

"Astronomical Sketching: A Step-by-Step Introduction" by Richard Handy, David B. Moody, Jeremy Perez, Erika Rix, and Sol Robbins is a pretty good read as well.

It is just drawing what you see like the earlier astronomers. I have also taken a picture and tried to sketch it. I guess it could be defined as any astronomical drawing some even use computer graphic programs.
