still not exactly sure why the 8-24mm has more glass/elements and costs more yet that doesnt mean its better than the smaller 7-21mm model.

Why the heck is it so much fatter?

and why did SVbony even make both models then? if they are so close in spec

It uses larger lenses for the slightly longer focal length, and slightly better eye relief.

I did photo comparisons between my fixed eyepieces, and I believe the 24 mm setting is actually closer to 25.5 mm.

It is likely that SVBony doesn't make anything, they are a marketing company.  Create a brand and bring products to market.   So they found 3 zooms that they thought would sell.  Perhaps they have a quality standard and these met the standard.

So, you order 250 of each and see how they sell.   The one that hits big gets reordered.  The one  that sells poorly gets dropped.

Celestron, and Orion are essentially marketing companies.  Their products are produced by someone else.  It might be exclusively for them and it might not.   That is why there are so many scopes, eyepieces, filters, etc. that look the same, because they are the same.

Orion and Sky-Watcher get most of their product from Synta.  There may be slight variations, like one has a RDF and one has a straight through 8X50 finder, but the core product is the same.

Zhumell and Apertura are marketing brands for GSO stuff, as another example.

Who knows why they sell the models they do? I don’t believe that Svbony manufactures them, they are distributors and retailers.

Why does General Motors market what are sometimes essentially the same vehicles (with minor cosmetic differences) as different brands? Or the Pontiac Vibe being essentially the same vehicle as the Toyota Matrix…. The answer is partially in marketing and creating perceived needs and solutions.

You forgot to mention that who ever makes the zooms, the ........... for Svbony makes them to a pretty high standard, the fit, the finish, the performance are as good as you get on any given dark nite. Recent comments are showing that and more and more continue to jump on the band wagon  I think you will find that Baader, .........  sneak in the same .......

As others have noted, Svbony is primarily (if not entirely) a marketing company reselling products that its sourcing department finds.

If you go to their website you will find a myriad of extremely similar products whether binoculars, zoom eyepieces or spotting scopes. Basically they will sell anything optical, if it sells well they will restock.

Just for zooms alone they have at least 5 (10-30, 7-21, 8-24, 7.2-21.6, 9-27) of which the 7-21, 7.2-21.6 and 9-27 seem to be available under other brands.

And for spotting scopes they list more than 20 models, of which 9 are 20-60x 80mm scopes.

Some of the Svbony stuff is indeed very good (not just good for the money) but you cannot extend that expectation across the brand.

They seem to be a very progressive company that are providing the astronomers, the hunters, the outdoors people with a great product for a great price  Remember when many North American, many Worldwide companys did the same thing before greed and the almighty dollar got to them  I hope some of them, elitists if you will, aren't shaking in their shoes, I really do because I don't think Svbony are going anywhere too soon but up, lol

Yes. I try to research their products to find where they originate because many of them are clones of something somewhere (talking about eyepieces). They seem to fall under a bigger distribution company, and have a close relationship with the factory, I believe.

One thing I have noticed is that they don't like to put their name on junk. I think there is some sort of QC, especially when it comes to choosing what products to sell.

just got through this thread.. whew.. my eyes hurt, lol.

So after 9 pages of great detail and observations, i am still finding myself asking this question..

Putting size aside... (as i dont care) is there any reason to have both the SVBONY 7-21mm and the SVBONY 8-24mm EP's? (for an 8" dob)

or is the 8-24mm EP just better in every way compared to the 7-21mm?

thank you

I have all three of them - for my refractors.

And from a person with a room full of takahashi's - that says something.

I used mine again last night on Jupiter & Saturn. Seeing was surprisingly excellent in spit of the planets being well past their highest altitude from my location. With it in my ED100, I quickly realized that I could go beyond the 8 mm setting, so I brought the zoom in and went back out with XW7 and XW5. The zoom did a nice job of showing the planet, but there was definitely some added glare and foggyness that disappeared when I used the Pentax XW's. The SvBony still held up very well though.

Very nice review. Well documented.

I have the three but mine is the SVB 7-21. I give a slight edge to the Celestron over the SVB, but BHZ is clearly the best.
