Cave never made Cassegrain optics. One company they bought them from was 3B Optics and they could have also purchased them from Coulter as well.  So there is really no Frankenstein Cave cassegrains when comes to the optics. The same with Cave refractors since they used Jaegers lenses.

                   - Dave

IIRC they made th 6" refractor objectives in house and purchased the 4" objectives from Jaegers. I did not know they didn't make the Cass mirrors. bob

Coulter optics? so to me its a frankenstein Cave...

Coulter slapped out some super good slower Mirrors for Newts back in the day.  Not sure about the Cass sets.

They were, but to me if I am buying a Cave, I want the heart of the Cave to be an original Cave mirror

I don't think i have heard of any Cave Cass's being knock out great. Not sure 100%.  They sure did fine on the slower Newts.

Did Cave ever sell any 4" Casses?  I have that 4" F15 3B set sold by Edmund...  I built a cheap ESC red-tube "tribute" scope around it, but if there's a vintage Cave OTA floating around out there...

I think there was a rare 6" posted on here not long ago.  No 4" i ever heard of. 8" and up was the norm.

Well, it looks like a mirror with "Cave Optics" scratched on it. Now, I'm not saying it is not a Cave mirror, just that Coulter or whomever could have scratched 'Cave Optics' on it to keep track of where they were sending it or Cave to 'claim' it or some such. What do we have in the archives re: Cave Making Cass Mirrors? Pix or Video would help - "No film, no case"

So, I went to the Cave-Astrola site and to me it seems they were perfectly capable, skill-wise, of making those Cass mirrors. It said they offered some Casses, but no mfr'ing details where I read. It also said Cave Sr. inscribed the backs of mirrors with Cave Optics with OE lettering, but then he was gone (I think) before the Casses were offered.

I believe I would vote "Cave made that mirror." If someone else had, they would have left their mark, or you'd see where something had been removed. We do not see that, yes?

The Cave cass mirrors scribed Cave Optical are done in Cave's hand, just like the

newt mirrors.

Its always been known 3-B and Tinsley and maybe even Coulter made mirrors for

the Cave cass's but generally these are not scribed.

It's not been talked about much who made the cass mirrors, the Cave cassegrains

are pretty rare.

There were some custom made Cave casses made by Cave. These were of exceptional

quality so Cave Optical was very capable of producing the design.

One of my 10" DKs has Tinsley optics.  The other one is unmarked, probably from the early 60s when they seemed to not always have signed them.

In reference to Cave Cassegrain scopes, I clearly remember talking with Tom Cave about having him make me a set of classic Cassegrain optics for a ten inch scope that I was seriously thinking of putting together in the very early seventies. He told me they had the personnel, equipment and facilities to easily handle the fabrication in-house at the time. However, I ended up buying a complete 10" Cass scope from another vendor that was local to me at the time. That was when I was still living in Cleveland, Ohio. The vendor was a small shop that made optics for Cleveland Astronomics and others in the area. It was a nice scope that I used a lot back in the seventies, until I moved on to bigger and better scopes (especially after moving to Southern California).

The CC utilizes a parabolic primary, in which case it could be made at F4 or F5 and used in a convertible Newtonian-Cassegrain. Didn’t Cave make some of those? It seems like I ran across one in southern Cali back in the ‘70s. It might have been a custom job? Maybe a 10”?
