Is this improved Gitzo column available for purchase?

To be honest I'm not living by this, I don't want to sell anything here due to the cumbersome transaction and high paypal charge, + I have no usage of usd, and there is not a way to draw out the money without waiting so long and being charged heavily again.

So if you are interested, AND you can send me rmb via anyway(debit card, alipay, wechat pay...anything), I'm very glad to help you get one for a very favarable price.

Message me if you really want one.

Can one just order it from Taobao?

Nice!

Seriously, how much does this cost and how do I get my hands on one?

I'll do that.

What's the maximum diameter plate the column could be mounted in and still allow for the cranking mechanism to operate?

You mean the diameter of the upper part of the tripod so you can still crank the handle?

I have a six-inch diameter AP pier I’d like to mount this column inside. The top plate is a bit over 6”. I thought I’d machine a hole in the the plate to make room for the column. Would that work?

I will measure this tomorrow.

But machining a 85mm hole in the top plate will work.

There are also holes in the flange to mount it.

Here some more details about the column.

The more I play around with it and the more I look at the details, the more I love it.

It works extremely smooth in both directions even with around 80 pounds of load at the top.

There is no play within the column itself, all play I can see and feel comes from the tripod.

The movable column is hold by three sets of each three ballbearings.

The set on the backside is running in a groove what prevents the column from turning:

Here you can see two of the ballbearing rows together with the gearbox.
At the top is a huge compression ring out of teflon to adjust the play of the column at the top:

IMG 1036

For sure I tried to have a look at the gearbox, but it is fully capsuled from both sides:

IMG 1039

So I had to take the gearbox off to look behind.
Here the gears at the column:

IMG 1041

And here the gearbox from the backside.
The gear is extremely wide and used the maximum of material available for best possible grip:

To see the internal gears I would need to take gearbox apart what I am not willing to do at the moment :-)

Again, I am extremely impressed by the build quality and the thoughts behind.

This is bay far the best center Column I have ever seen and just perfekt for big binoculars of 100mm aperture and above.

Thanks again to Range88 for making me this wonderful piece of gear available !

Jochen

Well, Jochen, it's certainly hard to say for sure without  X-ray vision.   I'd expect a worm gear on the end of the crank that turns a pinion gear above it that in turn engages the rack gearing on the column, similar in principle to the much smaller, current Manfrotto geared columns that many of us are familiar with.  Simple with no chance of rollback.   wink.gif

Very nice column and gear mechanism.  Most importantly it works as it should!  By the way, the crank looks like a duplicate of the one Gitzo uses for their geared columns, although it may be larger.  Hard to tell in the excellent photos.

I would be very interested if I needed another geared column.  I bought a Berlebach Planet K70 tripod for my 150 bino, and it works very well too.  The geared column easily raises and lowers +/- 70 pounds of post, fork mount, binocular, eyepieces, finder, and DSC, very smoothly.

Jochen, thank you for being brave enough to disassemble this and take photos for us.

Rick
