What do you mean by being "better" -- less cost, lower vibrations, different sizes, or what?

I would note say "better" because the Meade and Celestron are very similar in design and performance and there are generics that look to be more or less exactly the same thing.

You can make your own but it probably won't be any better than these at vibration suppression, but you could make them a bit larger for better load carrying.  I don't think anyone publishes a load rating on these but I would not recommend them for anything over about 170 lbs.  The sorbothane can squish up out of the sides when they are heavily loaded for long periods of time.  Under my C14 they would only last 3 or 4 years.

I use these and find them near identical to the "C" version...

I made my own for observing off my deck.,I used camping mat foam1/2" thick and taped it to plastic jar lids.,I also use crutch pads on my dobs an Onesky.,works all good.,
