Being an optics nerd, I started a discussion in the optics forums about this vintage (made in late 1970s) ED lens here.

 

Performance is impressive, even with a full frame camera. Here is the Lagoon + Trifid Nebula with minimal cropping. Feel free to pixel peep and give your thoughts!

That's impressive. Is that wide open at F4.5?

 

I have the 300mm F/4.5 ED-IF version I might have to try it out.

I have noticed my ED-IF version does show some purple chromatic aberration around bright stars, seems different than the ED non-IF version

I dont see any purple around any bright stars. I even took test shots of Vega and couldnt detect any CA.
