Good evening all,

A question for Canadian astronomers out there; where you do you buy your equipment?   Amazon.ca is an option but I'd rather support the smaller retailer if I can, even if they aren't local.

I'm in British Columbia.

Thanks for your help.

KW telescope in Kitchener (online and in store)
Ontario Telescope (online only)
I had a bad experience with Khan as well. I would not recommend them.

Well it goes without saying, not Khan Scope in Toronto.  I've purchased from Ontario Telescope which was fine, and Astronomy Plus which was only okay, but willing to give them the benefit of the doubt since it was the early days of Covid.

I often see the recommendation on CN to buy from a 'reputable' dealer, defined in that context as one where you can return equipment hassle-free if not performing to spec (e.g. a mount).  I don't know if this mystical kind of place exists in Canada, love to hear if it does.

I’ve used Markarian Fine Optics for the last few years and have (and still have) the 19 telescopes I purchased from them. Harout Markarian is the owner and they’re located near Kingsway and Knight St in Vancouver, BC.  Good and knowledgeable guys.

Only a portion of their inventory is on their website so phone or email to check

Thanks everyone.

I've added Khan Optical website to my firewall's blacklist so I don't accidentally click on a link.

KW Telescope has some great prices, thanks for the suggestion.

I've tried contacting Markarian a few times but they've never gotten back to me.  Never hurts to try again though.

Markarian Optics is a small two person storefront operation, Harout is the owner and deals with scope stuff and Bryce deals with service so sometimes email gets “lost”. I usually just phone them or stop in for coffee every couple of weeks.

I have been to their web site several times, they are very unorganized, hard to find the info you want / need. Its easy to stop in for a coffee if you live in that general area, for the rest of us throughout Canada what do you think ! Focus Scientific in Ottawa which is a small operation as well is on the ball and available to speak to, most times and their site is very comprehensive !

I admit I used to mainly use US based Vendors but have found equally matched pricing with OntarioTelescopes.

They don't always have the item in stock but it arrives eventually.

I have bought from them several times but their selection is very restricted but good service and their prices are in line with other Canadian dealers !

+1 for Ontario Telescope (across multiple orders).

Very limited experience with KW and Focus, but what I did have was fine.

I have bought from Ontario Telescope once before, however I have noticed many of their product descriptions are lacking detail and are full of grammatical errors. Not sure about you but when I'm spending $2k on something, I'd rather buy it from a vendor who takes the time to properly advertise their products. I usually purchase from FLO in the UK. Usually cheaper than anywhere else (including shipping) and they have good customer support.

Thx,
