I bought the pro version of Eclipse Orchestrator for the eclipse this year in Argentina.  In the past I used Eclipse Maestro Pro for the last 2 eclipses but that software would run only on a Mac and will not run on the new OS (Catalina).  I was therefore forced to buy EO.

I am running Windows 10 on my laptop and the camera is a Canon 1DX  MkII.  The "lens" is a Takahashi 76 DCU telescope.   Also connected is a DSUSB2 cable.  When I run a simulation, it starts off OK.  The camera recognizes the 1/1000 shutter speed and it rattles off a few frames.  When it comes time for the 2nd contact the speed goes to 1/125 for a few frames (as commanded by the software) and then ramps up to 1/6400 and then progressively slows down over the next several frames to 2 secs.  The camera, however, keeps on taking pictures at 1/125 not following the commands from the PC.  I am not sure what is going on.  I have tried it with the "Communications" settings in the camera to "Enabled" and "Disabled" with no change in behavior.  Not sure where to go from here.

I have emailed Moonglow Technologies but the only email they have is a sales@...  I hope they forward it to someone.

I'm sorry I can't help you. Will you be able to get into Argentina? We were told we would not be.

I am travelling with Astro-Trails and they have come up with a special arrangement with the Argentine government to let us in with some very strict rules: we have maintain a log of our daily temperature for 15 days before arrival at Buenos Aires, a negative Covid test done no earlier than 72 hours of arrival, a second test while there and very strict rules on wandering around town!!

We were supposed to go to Chile with an extension to Easter Island but then Chile closed its borders (although its open again) and that part of the trip was cancelled.  I have a friend who was going with a company called Ring of Fire, I think, and they cancelled the whole trip.  Thankfully he got a spot with Astro Trails. If you still have flights booked like my friend, call or email Astro-Trails and see if you can get in.  They have two tour options.  I think Tour 1 is your best chance.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jas! What part of Argentina do you plan to visit?

I will be driving south staying in Junín de Los Andes, considering interprovincial traveling is allowed. I am in Córdoba and it's not clear if restrictions will be lifted by the 14th. I would travel north up route 40 to the path of totality.

Was also considering using the free version of that software, but I am a newbie at eclipse pictures and even more with software...

Keep us posted if you manage to get it running.

Good luck!

Hi Diego,

Flying into Buenos Aires and then to Bariloche and to Fortin Noguero for the eclipse, back to Bariloche for a couple of days and back to BA.  With all the restrictions travel within Argentina would be very restricted. During the last eclipse (2019) we had a ton of fun in Argentina.

Hopefully Moonglow Tech will respond.  Otherwise I have a work around!!

Regards and good luck.

Jas

Sorry you haven't gotten much help with the software. I hope you do and get some great shots. After we cancelled Argentina, we almost booked in Chile. It seems more open. But there is a reason it's restricted and, for us, we decided caution is called for. We're very glad we went last year. Enjoy your trip. I hope you have clear skies and clean health.

Unfortunately when I had a question about support for my newer camera back in 2017, Although the documentation said my camera was supported, it would not work so I ended up using an older camera. I never received a response from them. I hope you have better luck.

In looking back at the information I got when I was testing the software, there were two logs it created: (1) script_debug.txt, and (2) actual_times.txt. What are these telling you?

2020/11/23 16:34:18.8, Now using REAL time!

But the problem is that although the PC appears to be sending commands to the camera the camera does not recognize/accept them.  The problem arises only after 2nd contact.  At 1st contact the camera changes to 1/1000 and takes shots as commanded.  At 2nd contact the shutter speed changes to 1/125 and according to the script 3 frames are taken.  The speed then changes to 1/8000 in the script but the camera keeps taking pictures at 1/125!!!

I have slowed down the script so that there is a 1 second delay between exposures, enough and more time for the camera to recover (I think) but nothing has changed.  I will slow it down to 2 and then 3 seconds and see what happens....   Nope that didn't work either!!

Don't know if this will help, but here are the files I used for the 2017 Total Eclipse including the actual live run. The script ran flawlessly, but I forgot to do a final sharp focus and the images were just enough out of focus so they could not be recovered. I was not happy.

1. My Config.ini file [reformatted for viewing purposes]

2. My Script: Final_Eclipse_Script.csv

3. My Live script_debug.txt

4. My Live actual_times.txt

Thank you very much John.  I will try them out and let you know how it works.

Last year I had the same problem in Argentina.  My mount came loose just before  C1. I managed to get it pointing back in the right direction with the aid of Duct Tape (what else!!) In the process I bumped the focus and, like you, all my pictures were out of focus.  But then I found Topaz Sharpener AI and got my pictures good enough for a print 36x12.  Give it a try or alternatively you can email me a file or two and I can run it through TS AI and see how it turns out.

I called Moonglow Technologies and was told my emails have been sent to the "engineer."  I haven't heard back from them since.

I just figured out what the problem was.  This is what happened:  I tried to run the script wizard script on the Canon 1DX II and the 5D III and it didn't work.  So I brought down the 7DII, which I was about to sell as I was not using it.  I ran the script and it worked!! I was stumped.  And then I remembered that I had forgotten to Enable Mirror Lockup on the camera as instructed in the user manual.  I did that and got the same old results where the shutter speed would not change.  I disabled the MLU on the camera and everything worked.  I then disabled MLU on each of the other cameras and everything worked as it should.  It looks like the MLU command from the software was in conflict with the MLU being enabled on the camera.

The  Manual is wrong and has to be changed. I have let Moonglow know.  They were of no use in this, keeping with their history of poor customer support.

Great to hear. I understand Argentina and Chile are limiting access to their country. Do you have confirmed access? If yes, good luck and post some images here when you get back.

We do have "confirmed" access.  It requires a form monitoring one's temperature etc for 2 weeks before departure which has to be emailed to the tour operator 2 days before departure.  It starts today!  They need a negative Covid PCr test done within 72 hours of departure  and a repeat test about a day or two on arrival.  Also required is Travel Insurance that covers Covid and quarantine. Once there we are to stay together as a group.  If these criteria are met its fine. I am told Chile is less restrictive.  I'll give you a full report when I get back.

"Old pro" at this!! Haha!!  But in spite of a checklist there's always just that one thing that's not on the list and is still at home.  I end up taking more than I need and I find that when I do there's someone who needs something I have and am not using.

Is there something that you take that is not always on someone's regular list; some little gizmo that you can't do without on a Eclipse trip?
