I just noticed that Cabelas and Bass Pro have the Vortex Viper HD 10x42 binoculars on Black Friday sale for USD 300 instead of normally USD 500. Seems like a good deal for a popular brand, but no experience with the binos myself.

The Pentax Papilio II 6.5x21 is a niche binocular, but one I heartily recommend. I have several with 20x80 the largest and the 6.5x21 the smallest. Vanguard ED 8x42 are my favorite all around use binocs (obviously I am not a high end budget guy). But I find the Papilio very good for birding by bright daylight, the closer focus for flowers and insects are amazing. Getting older and eyes getting weaker, the Papilio can really be helpful at times for trying to focus on something just out of sight. One use I haven't done yet but will at some point - recommended by one user - was use in museums to get closeups of items behind glass. This would work in coin shops as well.

My caveat - since the focus mechanism must twist the objective lens towards close focus points, there is more mechanical items to go wrong. Buy these binocs if you can treat them carefully. For an outdoor pair that's going to get roughed up, buy a tougher pair.

Also, they are small, so fit better in small-medium sized hands.

I have an Oberwerk 8x56 Porro but am looking for a 8x42 as an all purpose day/night Bino with close focusing abilities.
If those Vortex Vipers were 8x, I would jump on those in a heartbeat.

I just ordered Vortex Diamondback HD 10x42, DB-215 (OPMOD's version) for $149.99 in opticsplanet. I was thinking more about Nikon 10x50 Action Extreme, but I could not finally decide and now this discount made decision for me smile.gif Especially since I wanted a more compact bino.

I hope I made the right choice, especially for this price.

By the way, they have a discount on other binoculars in this series, but not so impressive. There is also a discount for this series in dickssportinggoods, but the prices are higher.

For that price, those Diamondbacks are pretty good. They're very well thought of in birding forums.

Enjoy the views!

Vixen has their "Standard Porro Prism Binocular SZR 16x50 ZCF" on sale for $19.95.  I had to order a pair, just out of curiosity.

So how is the Vixen Standard Porro Prism Binocular SZR 16x50 ZCF?   Acceptable for astro?   I'm also curious.  Thanks,  DrJ1

With 16x magnification and 50mm objectives you will get 3.1mm exit pupil which may be a bit small for astronomy use. With 50mm objectives I would prefer 10 or even 7x magnification and if you want 16x magnification then 70mm objectives are much better choice. I would not hold my breath with those Vixen 16x50. You probably be much better buying vintage or used 16X50. Used Action Extremes are "bit" more expensive but have a very good reviews at all sizes.

Thanks grzesznypl.  I have Pentax 16x60, Manon 16x50, and Jason Commander 162 16x50 binoculars.  The Pentax is my go-to 16x and I'm happy with it.  To my surprise, the Manon has such high contrast that I love the views of moon craters and Jupiter, even with the lower exit pupil.  The Jason 162 is OK, but not as good as the other two.  The Jason has some haze that I will eventually address.  I guess I'll pass on the Vixen.  DrJ1

I am not sure if worth it as it is the old model, but Campsaver and Midway USA have the 10x42 Vortex Diamondback for USD 130.
